Locking Up Our Own is an enlightening and compassionate investigation of the DC criminal justice system, and a history lesson of how we got to our methods of policing. Pair this with An Ameican Marriage by Tayari Jones, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and American Street by Ibi Zoboi for a nonfiction approach to understanding the arrests behind those three novels. I learned an incredible amount: I knew mandatory minimums for drugs were at the root of prison overpopulation, but I hadn't known the kind of support those laws received from the DC black communities.

First academic-y read in a while, and what fun! If you've ever noticed from the books I read, I'm a bit of a fairy tale nut, and every now and again, I like to read something about their origins. Fairy Tales: A New History deconstructs the argument of the modern "fairy tale" as stories that came out of an oral folk history, but rather as layered constructions of texts from Italian (Basile and Straparola) to French (Perrault and Lheritier) to German (Grimm). I have a basic knowledge of folk- and fairy-tales, and enjoyed the opportunity to look deeper into the history. Every new author who retells a fairy tale lends their own experiences, culture, and propaganda, whether to praise the goodness of human nature or revile in the banality of the same.
