I thought the premise of evil actions creating literal monsters was very interesting, and I think that the story was very creative.
For whatever reason though I had trouble finishing this book, I don't know why, I was just kind of bored especially once the “action” started. This may have been because while the plot was very creative, the good guys and bad guys seemed a bit one dimensional.
I didn't real feel a connection between the protagonists. The villains were almost cartoony in their violence. I probably won;t be continuing with this series, but will still check out other works from this author, perhaps her adult books will be better suited for me.

After a devastating loss, she is conscripted into the service of a tyrant king. There she must navigate the complex emotions of complicated nobels and servants alike as she tries to control her wild gift that often leaves her overwhelmed.
This book started off really strong, the relationships between Sonya and Pia were always charming and fun, and the complex dance between Sonya and the King was well choreographed. However the pace was very slow, by the 50% mark not much had happened, and there was a lot of repetitiveness regarding a will-they-won't-they romance. Any who hate love triangles, beware.
Despite the slow pace and slightly juvenile love triangle, I was still enjoying this for the unique settings and interesting relationships, but sadly the nail in the coffin ended up being the finale. It felt very rushed after the meandering pace of the first 75% and while I am not against neat endings this felt...disingenuous.
Despite my grumblings, overall this was a decent story and there were large parts of this that I did enjoy. I got this as a kindle daily deal for $2 and for that price I have no regrets with this book. I think that this author has great potential and in time could be an amazing writer.

Despite the title awkwardly sounding like a very erotic romance book, I quite enjoyed this novel. The story centers around Nalia, a powerful Jinni trapped in servitude to a cruel and mysterious master. When she finally gets a chance at freedom its only through a tense alliance with an enemy.
I loved the story, I was on the edge of my seat for much of it. The relationships were my favourite part. They were so well done, the relationship between Nalia and her master felt very realistically complicated. The sequel looks good too but for some reason I'm not in a rush to read it. Probably just due to my huge tbr pile.

I really enjoyed this. It's not very common (atleast not in the YA books I've been reading lately) for a story (a fantasy story no less) to focus so much on female friendship.
The relationship between Safiya and Iseult read so authentically that I couldn't help but root for them fiercely throughout the whole story. The side characters and bad guys were also well done, and seemingly everyone having their backstory “shrouded in mystery” was pretty fun too. Sometimes being in the dark can get frustrating, but this story paced the breadcrumbs very well and I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens to everyone!
Lately I have found myself being drawn to YA Westerns and when I saw this book, I was intrigued. Western adventure, Native American/Black protagonist Lately I have found myself being drawn to YA Westerns and when I saw this book, I was intrigued. Western adventure, Native American/Black protagonist and magic, magic, magic! Dream come true.
I had a lot of fun reading this, even though there is some darkness woven throughout the story. This is one of those books where the journey is the story more than the destination. As such at times the long road to the monster felt a tad tedious, and the ending was abrupt in comparison.
However I did enjoy this book overall and the characters were interesting, even if at times it felt that the author was trying to cram as much diversity as possible into this story. Still, I can't wait to check out the next book in the series and see if it is written in a more focused viewpoint.

The description pulled me in, and I thought that the idea of a teenaged Siren was very interesting and unique. However this book turned out to not be anything like I expected and not in a good way.
Overall this story is not bad, it's decent, some people might even say good. But for me I just wanted more. The plot just ended up being so much smaller than I had hoped. I thought it would be about a teenaged girl coming to grips with a newly discovered Siren ability. I thought it would follow her adventures as she used her power for good, bad and all the grey in between.
Instead what I got was essentially her using her power on a boring dud of a boy that she had become obsessed with...although obsessed is probably too strong of a word. It wasn't nearly as intriguing enough to warrant obsession...it was more....a young girl moaning about her first lust with the usual teenaged relationship drama except that she just so happens to be a Siren.
The moral quandaries in the book never managed to interest me because I just found myself not caring about any of the characters, so what did it matter if they all treated each other like shit?
The idea of a teenage secret agent is pretty appealing to me, however every book that I have ever read that has a premise anywhere similar to this, al The idea of a teenage secret agent is pretty appealing to me, however every book that I have ever read that has a premise anywhere similar to this, always falls flat for some reason.
I think that it's never realistic enough for me. I can't connect the supposed cold, calculating super spy to the awkward boy crazy, low self esteem quibbling teenager.
Also, not to sound rude but the writing felt very amateur to me. Nothing flowed that great and the dialogue was a bit awkward. In all fairness adding teen slang is always a risk and very few authors manage to pull it off. Overall, A for effort, but I would not recommend this book.

This was a so-so book with an interesting premise, but I think that this author's pace is too slow even for me. I had the same issue with her previous book “The Scorpio Races”. I am not often a fan of books where most of the action is in the last few pages/chapters, it always feels rushed to me and too little too late type of situation.
I felt pretty nonchalant about Blue, but I suppose the book is called the raven boys for a reason. Even so I did not find them all that interesting either. Everything felt rather flat in this novel. Overall interesting plot, but the execution didn't really work for me.
Not sure if I will continue the series since it took me sooo long just to read this book, but since I do own them all I might. Annnd this ladies and gentlemen, is why you never buy an entire series all at once! Always try out at least one book first. I entreat you, resist the urge!

Well this was certainly a lesson in awkwardness. The writing was very stilted and weird, and the plot itself was a little silly. The book felt more like an outline of a draft than a finished story.
The world building didn't work well either, I actually had to double check that this book was the first in the series, since the way everything was described so generically made it seem like a book in the middle of the series with only a quick brush up of past books.
It was so odd that huge events were just mentioned casually in one sentence and never explained in any detail. Nothing was believable and the characters felt flat to me. Unfortunately I can't really think of anything good to say about this book, it read like a tenth grade writing assignment. 1.5/5

I just much prefer the pace of the newer series, this one seemed to drag much more. Perhaps because there is a lot more political intrigue.
It did pick up its pace by the 70% mark, and I loved that action packed ending. I just wish that it had been able to keep me so engaged throughout. To be honest I don't actually remember a ton from this novel, I read it over a long period of time and poof its gone.
Sorry for this non-review.
In essence;
1. I enjoyed this novel once all the pieces started to fit together.
2. The character relationships were just as complex and interesting as always.
3. The plot dragged a bit too much for me.
4. But I still love this series.
5. I think I would just be better off not reading other books by the author at the same time, as perhaps it causes me to make unfair comparisons.
Overall, decent offering and I look forward to the next one.

The thing about jellyfish- Pretty writing and interesting story, but I don't read a lot of middle grade books. 3.5/5
The game of lives- Skipped due to not reading the first two in the series. Will not count towards final tally.
These shallow graves- Decent story line but the stilted/overly formal dialogue might get annoying. 3/5

Nightfall- eh, just not interested in this. 2/5
What we saw- Good writing but a little too dark for me. I've also seen this plot a million times, but I guess as a fan of Dystopian I can't really talk about repetitiveness. 2.5/5

Illuminae- A tad confusing at times, but overall really enjoyed this. 4/5. (R)

Hello, goodbye and everything in between- Not bad, but a little too cheesy for me. 2.5/5
Everything,everything- Awesome, look forward to reading the full novel. Maybe not the most original plot, but I got sucked into it right away. 4.5/5 (R)
