... ok. I was not expecting all the freaking emotions. Let me first say that Cassis has been my fave out of all Sam’s guys since book 1 so i was LOVING the fact that most the POV’s are his. He was delightful. Broken and tired and so so lonely and the inner turmoil he felt while fighting his need and love for Sam was so angsty and perfect. It made this book even that much better.
The story-line was super interesting. I love that we got to see inside Talon and all the fae goodness. I love that Sam stayed true to herself the entire time she was there and continued to fight for herself and her men.
Wanna know what I loved the most? THE FACT THAT THERE WAS A FREAKING POWER OF 5 CROSSOVER. Soooo.. I wont go into detail because I dont want to spoil it but we get to see old AND new characters from Power of 5 and I am not kidding you when I said I squealed in delight when I realized who was on the page. SQUEALED. Like... woke my 4 year old up because I was so excited about it.
So if anything- you have to read the book for that alone ...more

I have been looking forward to Tridents story since I started this series. So.. 7 books ago? Let me point out that I'm the WORST at finishing series. Usually I start one and quit by book 3 or 4. They all start to blur together. This is soooo not the case here. The character are hilarious and unique. The story-telling is imaginative and fun. The romance is off the charts. Plus the entire idea of dragon demigods is wonderful.
So.. trident. The fun-loving man-whore who's just looking for a good time. I couldn't WAIT to read about the girl who finally brought him to his knees. And this soooo did not disappoint. I won't get into spoilers but let's just say there was a plot twist I *so* did not see coming and it was absolutely lovely. Trident showed so much depth I wasn't expecting while still staying true to himself. The FMC was wonderful and fun to read. And as per usual I'm absolutely itching for the next book. I'm guessing it will be Death's book which is ...more

Once again, another freaking amazing FMC and overprotective, crazy guys who love her. This reminds me a bit of some of her PNR’s but without the paranormal part obviously.
I. Was. Entranced. Like holy god... I still dont know how she manages to write these crazy possessive alpha-males the way she does without it getting boring or feeling like the same ass characters over and over. M. Sinclair’s writing JUST GETS BETTER.

It is baffling to me (and yet not at all) that Sanderson is so able to create such an amazing and soul-consuming (pun intended) and deep story in under 150 pages.
Not only was this novella fantastic and had me hooked from page 1, I loved learning more about the investiture of Sel, and getting another piece of the Cosmere puzzle.
Absolutely, unequivocally amazing. As per usual. ...more

Ok so.. Power of 5 (Alex Lidell’s original RH romance) was my first ever RH and i totally fell in love with the genre bc of that story. How could you not with guys like River and Tye and Coal and Shade? They’re like.. perfect. I’m still swooning a year later, for realz.
Unnntttilll you meet their asshole/alphahole vampire/fae counterparts like 34891 years in the future or on another plane of existence or another world in a galaxy far far away that is actually our world or whatever: Cassis, Asher, Ellis and Rees.
Holy. Jesus.
They are... phew. I don’t have words. They’re EVERYTHING. They’re tortured and wonderful and are genuine characters that I cant NOT fall in love with. I love being in their heads and I love each one of them even when they’re being big jerks (which they totally are sometimes. But its ok bc they don’t WANT to be.. read: Tortured Past TM)
Whats awesome about this series, as well, is that Sam is such a different character from Lera. While Lera was more demure and held her own but in a quiet confident way, Sam is in your face and sassy and gives no fucks. Until she does (which she does.. she really gives a lot of fucks. Dont let her fool you despite the fact that shes narrating this so really she CANT fool you but you get what I’m saying, yeah? Yeah.).
The magic and story-line is, AGAIN, so freaking brilliant and so far beyond most RH’s I read. The over-lying story is just as interesting as the relationships and romance. Thats what I love about Alex. Her writing and ability to not only tell a story but to balance it perfectly with the relationships and the romance makes her one hell of a writer for this genre. Shes magnificent. I cant say more than that because the moment I start talking about the story itself i wont stop and then I’ll have to spoiler-tag this and no one will read it and I reallllyy dont want to do that. You’ll just have to trust me. Because I’m very trust-able.
(And like.. Alex is also super nice based on the one time I talked to her. But thats still a total plus in my book because ive always been of the mind that stories are the art of authors. While they share them with us, the readers, these are their babies and we should be groveling at their feet thanking them for letting us into their magnificent brains rather than writing stupid ass comments like “WHENS THE NEXT BOOK COME OUT ARE YOU EVEN WORKING ON IT” and the like. Which i see far too often. Especially in facebook groups. Yeah, you witches know who you are. STOP IT.)
Anyways, I’m off to re-read Power of 5. Ive done nothing but read Alex’s books including this re-read the last two days and I’m loving my life and I know you all wish you were me. Or maybe you can be me if you just READ THESE BOOKS....more

I almost have this book 3 stars but I think that's unfair. I listened to probably 50% of it on audible and the narrators were so so so terrible and I think that irritated me.
The book was good. It was entertaining and the magic system was pretty cool. I enjoyed Ash and Marcus. I enjoyed all the secrets and the multiple points of view. The world building was delightful. Reminded me a bit of the Grishaverse in a way.. kind of. A little bit.
Some parts did drag, though, and some of the plot twists were easy to foretell.
Overall I feel like 4 stars rounded up is fair. It wasn't one of the best books I've ever read but it also wasn't average. The narrators were absolutely fucking horrendous though. I mean awful. I cringed quite a bit while reading. If you've ever heard the giro who does Lia Mara's voice in the last two Cursebreaker books, imagine that but with the weirdest ass inflection you've ever heard in your life. Not accent. Just pauses in the middle of sentences. Dragging out and clipping random words. I had to speed it up to 2x for it to even be bearable. ...more

I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars because this really was an entertaining and lovely story. Not once was I ever bored and I read it in a single sitting. Started it at 11am and finished it at 3pm. It just isn't something that made me sit up and say "omg this was AMAZING."
It was good. The dual stories and intertwining history were great. The relationships between Nell, Eliza and Caroline were well done. The fact that the author kept pointing out the parallels between the two stories 200 years apart was a bit annoying, however. I think as an author you have to walk a fine line between making your points known and treating your reader like they're fucking idiots and Ms. Penner certainly crossed over to the latter a few times. I mean obviously we were meant to draw parallels between the two stories. If there was any doubt it's in the damn blurb and pointed out by our present day heroine, Caroline, every gods damned time we visited her POV.
That being said, it was a super interesting look at love, life, regrets and the truth in general. It was extremely entertaining and a really beautiful story. I'll definitely recommend it to others but I don't think I'll read it again. ...more

What an amazing way to star the new year. Ive owned this book since the day it came out just simply bc I loved the cover so much. I cant believe I waited this long to read it. This is exactly what I want from a YA book. There was mystery and romance and angst and totally Dysfunctional Hot Brothers(TM) and just a damn good story.
I saw someone else say this book is like Knives Out meets Paper Princess meets Truly Devious and I would have to say thats a totally accurate comparison.
Avery is a young girl who lives with her older half-sister who’s her guardian since her mother died. She is *extremely* smart, and loves to solve puzzles. She’s also poor and her older sister tends to make some pretty terrible life decisions involving an on-again off-again boyfriend so she’s ALSO sleeping in her car. In her down time she likes to do math, daydream about traveling and play chess with an old homeless man in the park.
One day a guy (I use this word loosely. At first I thought Grayson was like a 30 year old guy but he is, apparently, in his late teens/early 20’s) with a Texas drawl and a grey suit shows up at her school and informs her that his grandfather (Tobias Hawthorne), the probably richest man in the world, has died and she is in his will. Avery has never met this Old Rich White Man but she says “screw it,” and she and her sister hop on a plane to TX and fly to the reading of this will shes supposedly in.
When she gets there, she meets the rest of the family: Xander, the youngest of the Dysfunctional Hot Brothers(TM), Nash, the oldest and the one who really truly doesnt gaf about anything except for taking in strays during his sporadic liaisons across the country and bringing them back to save them from poverty (or like.. I dunno.. life) by employing them at Hawthorne House, Grayson (who we’ve already met) who everyone in the family calls the Heir Apparent, and eventually Jameson, the drunk thrill-seeking Dysfunctional Hot Brother who takes to calling Avery nicknames like “Mystery Girl,” because why tf not? In addition to the brothers, she meets Alisa (the family lawyer), Oren (head of security), Skye (The Dysfunctional Hot Brothers’ mom who has no qualms admitting that each one of her sons was fathered by a separate random dude she hasnt spoken to since she got pregnant), Zara (the Aunt) and Nan (the great-grandmother. Because no crazy family would be complete without an old ass, scary grandma)
Well, you probably see this coming, good ole Tobias didnt leave his family *shit*... in fact, he left it ALL to Avery. $46.2 BILLION DOLLARS. The only stipulation is that Avery has to live in Hawthorne House for a year and cant kick the family out unless they put her life in danger. Avery has never even met Tobias before so of course everyone is like WTFFFF because the old nut job DISINHERITED HIS ENTIRE ASS FAMILY.
Chaos ensues. And amongst that chaos, Tobias left his grandsons and Avery a puzzle.. a sort of game. Before his death he insisted a letter be passed out to the four boys and Avery. Inside the each of the boys’ letter are clues. Clues to be used in one last game. A a game they all hope will answer all their questions, and one Avery hopes will answer the biggest question of all: Why her? Especially since her lettering only contained “I’m sorry.”
The events that follow are a whirlwind. There’s secrets and attempts on Avery’s life. Theres the crazy ex-boyfriend and a dead ex-girlfriend. Theres romance with not one but TWO of the brothers, galas and insane cousins and secret passageways and riddles upon riddles and tricks upon tricks.
This has to have been one of the more delightful books I’ve read. I’m both simultaneously upset I read it so far before the second book comes out (and trust me youre going to want that second book BECAUSE THAT CLIFF HANGERRRRR) and so happy that I did because it was AMAZING.
The clues that popped up throughout the book were so well placed that I found myself forgetting them, and just when I think the 5 teenagers have figured it all out someone is all, “But what about....?” And I’m all, “HES RIGHT!”
The characters are fantastic. I fell in love with all the Hawthorne heirs for eleventy-billion reasons. Not least of all that they’re cryptic and sad and broken and cant seem to figure out how they all feel about Avery but theres that beautiful wonderful chemistry that I love so much in a slow-burn. Chemistry that is so hard to get right most of the time, but that Jennifer Lynn Barnes does beautifully.
The sequel to this book is going straight to the top of my “most anticipated new releases” for 2021. Thank the old gods and the new that I started this year out with this book. Maybe I can take this as a sign that 2021 wont throat punch me like 2020 did. Here’s to hoping...more

I can't even begin to put into words how deliciously, magically perfect this book was. It was everything I'd hoped it would be and more.
Honestly I prefer Cassian and Nesta and all the ways they're messed up and all the ways their jagged edges fit together more than I like Feyre and Rhysand.
This book was wonderful and delightful and raw and emotional and full of hope. It was perfect.
Except. For one little thing
SPOILERS bc I need to complain about the one thing that pissed me off
I'd like to add: (and rip me to shreds all you want but it's the truth) the incessant pandering to Rhysand and his precious feelings is getting fucking old. He is not, despite what his inner circle believes, the end-all, be-all. He is not flawless. He is not perfect. And he's really kind of a fucking ass in this book. And so is Feyre. So much so that I actually loathed the two of them while I read this. How gods damned blind and self-absorbed do you have to be not to see that your own sister is so depressed that at one point she wants to END HER OWN LIFE?? I mean for shits sake. They flaunt their happiness around and send scathing remarks Nesta's way every time she steps in a room and for some reason it's her fault that they make her feel like total shit. The victim-blaming is real in this book.
And don't get me wrong. Nesta did a lot of messed up stuff. But at least she owns it. At least she works to better herself. At least she isn't a spoiled ass High Lord/Lady. She goes through massive ass trauma and then has absolutely zero support despite the fact that it's glaringly obviously that she's ridiculously in over her head and is screaming for help. Ever heard the saying "standing in a crowded room screaming at the top of my lunges and no one is even looking?" Because that was Nesta. And it was so freaking obvious even in ACOFAS that she was spiraling and getting worse and worse, yet all Rhysand and feyre care about is how it makes *them* look. How it reflects poorly on the gods damned Court of Dreams.
They irritated me so thoroughly that I wasn't even happy or excited about the pregnancy or baby. And the ending chafed my ass something fierce too because once again, Feyre and Rhysand wind up with everything and NESTA is the one who has to make a huge sacrifice.
So yeah. I loved the book. Loved everything about Nesta and Cassian. Hated Rhysand and Feyre. Hated them so much that I don't know that there's any coming back from this for me as a fan. I simply can not see how the way they were portrayed in this book will improve in the subsequent stories in this arc....more
