The Woman in Cabin 10 promised an intense read, but all I felt after reading this was intense anger. Anger because I expected so much more than what the author promised. The premise is typical of a thriller novel, it depicts a rollercoaster ride. This novel unfortunately is a huge disappointment for me. So much time wasted.

I listened to this book because I had other books I was already reading, and I need to listen to a book while driving. The narrator didn't have the most pleasing voice, but she still did a good job. I believe that the character the author created, Lo, is the problem. She's a rude, conceited, and honestly a bit stupid. I hate thrillers with a good plot but has terrible characters. This novel has terrible characters and a mediocre plot.

It all started with Lo and a certain event in her flat. That event made her paranoid and affected most of what happens next in the novel. When she finally got aboard The Aurora, I thought that it should get really good from here, but right from the start of her being onboard, it starts to get really dull and annoying. I didn't like her approach to people, even if the justification is because of what happened to her before, it's a bit unlikely that anyone is that rude. If I were to meet her in person, I would most likely hate her just from the introduction. The climax of the novel shouldn't even be considered as a real climax, because there is none. It's all rambling and talking to the crew. The mystery started to seem really boring because of all her rambling and complaining about everything.

The most annoying part of the novel is the disgusting ending and revelation of the secret. That's it? I wasted 9 hours of my life listening to this piece of crap? I've read way better thrillers with cliches plot than this. This is probably the most overhyped book I've read in my life. I'm glad I didn't buy a physical copy because I might give it away to a person that I hate. I firmly believe that it wouldn't have made a difference if I read this, because I would be equally annoyed with the outcome, and the main character.

After days of contemplating ,I can't give this more than 1 star. Whenever I remember this novel, there's no positive feeling or emotion felt toward it. If only I could forget about novels, this would be a good use of that ability.

Philip I just checked this out from the library yesterday haha. I guess I'll see how it goes.

message 2: by Euraylie (new)

Euraylie I was going back and on forth on reading this, but I think this seals it. Too many people have a similar view of this book. It's gonna be a pass for me.

Janet I agree on over-hyped books, and while I suspected that it was a "get on the Gone Girl" train" thing, I hoped it would be as good as I expected. I was disappointed.

Heather Westbrook Exactly! I didn't hate Lo, I wanted to like her so much, but she was all over the place throughout the whole book. She made my head hurt. Plus, am I the only one that thought she was an idiot for going around talking about the mystery to literally everyone when she's supposed to be an experienced reporter? Shouldn't she know better? I wanted to scream at her that she was being a grand idiot. She kept justifying her actions with the fact that she was a reporter and couldn't give up, yet, that was her whole purpose of being on the darn boat and though she thought her job to be menial, she didn't act like a professional the entire time she was on the thing until she was involved in a scary situation.

Lizpava Totally agree as I also listened to it in the car. I might have skimmed it if I had the book. It wasn't even meaty enough for a short story.

message 6: by T-Roy (new)

T-Roy I couldn't agree with you more. It took me over 2 weeks to read because it was so boring and the so called suspense was just false. What I mean is Lo simply breathing and counting to three to herself is NOT suspenseful at all. This thing was like reading the script to a soap opera or something. Horrible.

Heather Yes -- agree with this 100%

Ttramm Just started listening to the book, and already agree that the character Lo is a problem. I find her annoying and rude as well.

message 9: by Haidee (new)

Haidee Nightingale I got this book out from the library BEFORE I knew the hype surrounding it (I've since seen it on so many 'must read' lists) and I barely got through the first few chapters before deciding I didn't like the main character or the writing style. I wondered if I'd given up too early but I feel better now having read this review!

Karina Jacques Couldn't be more agree with your review! I really wanted to like this book for all the hype surrounding, but I just couldn't! Lo is probably the most annoying character I've ever read!

Chandré Louw Great Review. I completely agree. It frustrates me that some people seem to latch on to a novel and believe they love it because of hype. Open your eyes!

message 12: by Jaye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jaye I'm confused. Was the author intentionally trying to make lo unlikeable because she is obviously a horrible person for how she treats others or are we supposed to be sympathetic towards her because she clearly has issues?

message 13: by Jeanne (new) - added it

Jeanne Kuennen I am currently reading this and I cannot stand Lo. I honestly don't care what happens to her and don't even want to finish this book.

Shreya Palodhi I agree with you that Lo is perhaps the most unlikable character I have read in a long time. She is like this whinny, complaining woman who is old enough to know better. For god's sake she is 32. More of all she is an experienced reporter of 10 years. In each and every scene she had a problem. Be it breakfast or the room or the passengers. Then her softness towards Carrie was also unjustified. Towards the end she even justifies Carrie 's actions to Judah

Kendra Mikols Lo bugged me so much!! She really was not right. I actually thought the narrator made her less likeable though

Sandra LaMarche Hated this book - not suspenseful, not an easy read - I found myself speed-reading through the last half just to get it over with!

Siera I was the same way, Sandra!

Siera I was the same way, Sandra!

Will M. Joe wrote: "Right there with you Will! I just finished "listening" to this on my road trip and ...here I thought, I was screaming at my TV during political news too much, as here I am driving yelling at this L..."

I also listened to this and it just one of the worst books out there. I even had to use the "2x" speed at some point just to get it over it.

Saurabh Kumar I felt the same way !! Stupid character and a thin plot .. I had to speed read it just to get over

Tiffany Murphy I felt the same way! Lo was a horrible person, so incredibly rude! I wouldn’t be able to stand being around someone like her

Marilyn Brine I didn't think Lo stupid as much as I wished that she's stop calling herself "Stupid" toward the end of the story!

message 23: by Tara (new) - rated it 1 star

Tara Elizabeth This book put me in the worst mood. Your review is so on point!

Turfa Zubedi Can someone explain the ending? How did Carrie escape?

Wisewebwoman exactly. I got 142 pages in. Hard to beat the incompetence and rudeness of the main character. Hype about this book was so misleading. waste of time.

Barbara I felt exactly the same way too! Book has made me angry and frustrated I wasted time on it.

Casey I'm in the midst of listening to it now, and I have to agree with those who find Lo unpleasant. She's just s darn rude to everyone. In the back of my mind I'm thinking, what is it with drunken, rude women, . . .and then I remembered The Girl on the Train, a book I absolutely HATED. I'll get through this, but I dare say, from reading some of the comments, I'm not gonna be happy. :)

message 28: by Trish (new) - rated it 1 star

Trish I agree! I hated this book so much! I wonder if the author challenged herself to make the most disliked character. Let’s have a history of anxiety, with a dollop of PTSD, zero person and communication skills, and an inconsistent interest that pops up at random of wanting to do a good job, while being ridiculously over the top about a person she doesn’t know that may have been murdered.

I would rather have lunch with Umbridge than a passing conversation with Lo. That is how much I hated his book and all the characters. I am glad I didn’t pay for this book and am so happy to have it in the garbage now.

message 29: by Sana (new) - rated it 1 star

Sana Sayed Your review is spot on.

Laura Day I agree and I’m annoyed with characters who are constantly drinking..and can’t understand why their lives are falling apart as they bleary eyed, confused , stagger through the pages..

I wrote this review more than 2 years ago and I havent been on Goodreads that much lately but Im glad that a lot of people are agreeing with me. I still remember how awful this novel is

message 32: by Mary (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mary Ann I agree with most of the reviews here. Lo was too scattered to have the responsibility of her job. She really wasn't very likeable and kept making stupid decisions. Also, there was no climax to the book. It just lumbered along to the end. A disappointment.

message 33: by Bruce (new) - rated it 1 star

Bruce I made it through about one hour of the audiobook before giving up. I just couldn’t seem to like or even care about Lo. It seems Ruth aware likes to recycle this type of character in a lot of her books.

message 34: by Anju (new) - rated it 1 star

Anju My sentiments exactly.

message 35: by Dcasi (new) - rated it 1 star

Dcasi Completely agree with this review. Lo is just plain annoying. The fact that for about 20 chapters the plot goes absolutely nowhere ( not even backwards!) is just one of this book's many flaws. The ending, dear reader, was beyond disappointing. I had hope when things seemed to finally turn around in chapter 27, but it was a big nothing burger. I never leave reviews, but I feel it my duty to spare people this waste of time. Proceed with caution. You have been warned!

Nastaran AGREED!

message 37: by Sanya (new)

Sanya I tried to listen to this book too. I got through less than an hour. The main character annoyed me so much and I couldn’t stand how stupid she was. And the readers voice was a bit grating. DNF!! Actually, barely started.

Melissa It was super annoying that the characters were always drinking.

Paloma Rodriguez The revelation at the end was awful! I almost missed it because I was falling asleep

frankie it wasn’t the best book but can h pls elaborate on the “disgusting” ending like i listened to the audiobook too and i finsihed it today and im just confused can u elaborate pls
