Myth #5: Mergers help keep hospitals open—particularly hospitals that are financially challenged. This is especially evident in rural communities that are faced with low patient volumes and a heavy reliance on Medicare and Medicaid programs that reimburse below the cost of care. Fact #5: Decades of research overwhelmingly show that consolidation increases prices 10%–20%. While operating expenses may decrease, profits increase through ever-increasing prices. President, Transformative Healthcare Markets | Helping healthcare leaders take their next best action
Thank you, Lecia Bushak and MM+M for your thought-provoking article on the cost of GLP-1 medications. According to our most recent IRIS report, the cost of GLP-1 drugs on the U.S. healthcare system has increased more than 6% between February and May of 2024. You may think single digit growth is expected – but when you are talking about a total cost of close to $29B total – it is a different conversation. In my recent article, I stated that the growing economic impact of GLP-1s will require the healthcare industry to come up with new financial models that give us a broader, dimensional view of obesity—and a shift in perspective—from merely trying to save money to making strategic investments in better health outcomes. Since the article was published, I’ve been thinking (and have been asked), how do we make this happen??? First, we need new metrics and benchmarks that enable the U.S. healthcare ecosystem – payers, employers, life sciences organizations, policy makers, and clinicians alike – to design for the complexities, bring the subjectivity that exists into an objective frame, and align appropriate patient and system outcomes that will serve as progress markers to improving population health. That’s a big charge but obesity remains a big, complex condition. Here are three questions healthcare sector leaders should be asking themselves as we all work towards effectively treating obesity and supporting long-term population health goals: -- Life Sciences / Pharma -- It is time to rethink “traditional” segmentation. How do we shift from “patient” to “consumer” and meet people (and reach them) where they are? What services can we provide to support people’s weight-loss journey, even though our role may be finite? -- Employers -- How can we design a holistic benefit that recognizes obesity as a chronic disease and serves your current and future workforce? What do we need to consider and who are the right partners? -- Health Plans/Payers -- How are we integrating population health metrics beyond short-term costs into decision-making? I’d love to hear your thoughts on other macroenvironment challenges for obesity and treatment that leaders are facing today. Our team is dedicated to digging in and bringing insights (and solutions) to healthcare stakeholders. #healthcare #economics #populationhealth #healthcareinnovation https://lnkd.in/gBK9qaTz

“If you can help people solve one of the biggest challenges in American life, which is obesity, you’re going to end up having a happier, healthier workforce,” Shawn Gremminger, president and CEO of the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions. Obesity is now considered a chronic disease that can have a spiraling effect on so many other health concerns. If treated, the individual will often face less health problems, thus decreasing their employer’s healthcare spend in other areas. The trending obesity treatments drugs are pricey – but does it help in the long run, especially if they are used and prescribed properly? Gain insight in the article below.
"With about half of Americans getting health insurance through their job, employers are in a unique position to drive change in how obesity is treated. But the cost issue is not insignificant." #glp1 #healthcare #obesity #ozempic #wegovy #employeehealth
