  • North Mississippi Medical Center-Tupelo recently honored Chris Smith, a physical therapy assistant with the Rehab Institute, as Star of the Month for his enthusiasm in delivering exceptional patient care. Chris joined the NMHS team in 2006, beginning his tenure in Ambassador Services while finishing his associate degree in physical therapist assistant technology. Chris was nominated for his commitment to a patient who had been bedridden for months and was feeling discouraged. Seeing the determination and potential in his patient, Chris went above and beyond to help him out of bed and into a chair, but his efforts didn’t end there. He initiated a consult with the Rehab Institute and continued working with this patient to increase his mobility. In a group effort between Chris and the staff at Amory, the patient worked until he was able to transfer into a wheelchair, beginning the journey of regaining his freedom. Chris is a shining example of our C.A.R.E.S. Values in action, taking his empathy for this patient’s struggle to the next level. According to his nomination form, Chris exudes kindness and enthusiasm towards his patients, moving them to accomplish new heights. “His determination to never give up enabled this patient to walk again,” writes the peer who nominated him. “Empathy is a powerful thing sometimes,” Chris says, “And if caring is a curse, then I’m willing to live with that.” Chris is a resident of Saltillo with his wife of 15 years, Kelli and their two children, Mabry and Malek. Congratulations again, Chris! We are so glad our patients get to work with such an exemplary individual. You earned this! #WhatConnectsYou
