"The Project Rebuild Grant of 2023 helped me achieve the opportunity to be able to rent out a temporary shared kitchen space. This gave me the chance to be able to run some food service concepts without using my personal funds to achieve some research and development. I created a meal prep program that was able to work its course for almost 1 year. This grant allowed me to create more income to plan for a second year with the shared kitchen, but doing a different concept. The grant can go a long way if used properly. I appreciate having this chance to grow and reflect on how to further push my personal chef services." - Rene B. Oregon Business asked leaders in Oregon’s business and political sectors what they make of 2023 — and what they hope to see in 2024. Here’s what they said: Jason Brandt President & CEO, Oregon Restaurant & Lodging Association Without question, the high point was getting further away from the grueling regulations endured by Oregon’s hospitality industry during the pandemic. The saga of COVID was nothing less than an explosion of disruptions and uncertainty. Moving beyond those challenges and reclaiming a sense of normalcy in our industry remains our focus. And there is plenty left to do in support of our restaurants and hotels as they work to sustain their operations and the employment opportunities they provide in a post-COVID world. In addition to retail and residential growth, recommitment in the office market, and significant investment Downtown, we made strides in our environment and experience work. ▪ Clean & Safe Program: The report details the program’s efficacy through increased personnel and data-driven deployment strategies – 1,400-plus safety escorts, 112,000 hours of deployment, and more than 802,000 pounds of trash collected, to name a few. ▪ Activation of Public Spaces: More than 28 programs across 155 days ensured a lively Downtown throughout the year, attracting significant crowds. ▪ Large-Scale Events: In addition to regular programming, Downtown Cleveland’s annual WinterLand event, and MetroHealth Juneteenth Freedom Festival brought a combined crowd of more than 400,000 people to the city’s core. Helping ambitious service-based business owners achieve growth with expert VA support in admin & social media 📈 | Founder of Liruss Virtual Business Services | Passionate about your success | Let's connect! 💬
I’m knackered! 💤 (I apologise in advance if this post comes out like an actual brain fart!) Today I took my quarterly road trip from Bristol to Newbury to spend the day with Bigger Brighter Bolder and co….(by co, I mean about 50 other awesome business owners!) As members we take accountability very seriously. In addition to the monthly meetings, content sessions and online community support, we all take time out of our respective businesses to reflect on our own performance for each quarter, the good the bad and the ugly as well as make plans for the following quarter. We do this by coming together and doing board reports to eachother. It’s empowering, eye opening, challenging, confronting but most importantly, it’s how we all grow together, get inspired and stay unstuck! By the time I get home after these sessions, I’m done. I can barely string a sentence together. Because it is so value packed and inspiring - my drive home consists of me literally chomping at the bit to take action in my business before entering the house and flopping onto the sofa! We network, we eat good food, we catch up and we support one another. Running a business is lonely. But it doesn’t have to be. There are communities out there if you know where to look. If you want to know more about this awesome lot, I’ll add a link in the comments. I’m sure they have a few workshops coming up if you want a taster! #community #accountability #businessgrowth

This is me after days of cooking, scrubbing hired kitchens, admin, finances, meetings, ordering, getting the car fixed, training a dog, making sure my kids are ok (child 1 is about to give birth any day), not much sleep, worrying about the rising costs of everything and the effect it is having on the business and having to re-write the business plan, again. Facilitating workshops, being on a commission, needing a hair cut (desperately), not eating properly and dealing with the ever present thing that is my brain that functions entirely outside of the realms of norm. Constantly wondering why funding is given to projects and organisations that achieve nothing. Its not flattering and I got a shock to see how exhausted I look, but, as always, my life with food runs deep and it is a central part of me. I have a couple of weeks 'working from home' booked in and cannot wait. Running your own small business in this economic climate is horrendous at times but I will not give up, I have worked too hard. The cost of ingredients is eye watering and I cannot reflect in the increases in my products or services as I would price myself out of the market. Oh, we are also renovating a house. #theburntchefproject #cheflife #smallbusinessowner #sortthecountryout #knackered #imofftobed

PSA: This is networking. A group of local small business owners I get together with every quarter to chat about Placer County and share ideas. Each ones successes and opportunities helps the rest strategize growth and sustainability. We met at a new restaurant to show support for the community around us. 🤙☘️ #networking #supportlocalbusinesses #shareideas #knowledgeispower

High Streets Expert & Director, The People & Places Partnership: Bringing facts and faces to town centres. @man_about_towns
"It's not what you do, it's the way that you do it." At The People & Places Partnership Ltd. we love it when a local authority asks us to help review 'how' they reshape places rather than soley focusing on the 'what'. Even better when that it's a local authority like Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council in Northern Ireland that already has a good processes in place and a respected track record of working with their communities to reshape and bring their town centres to life. After all, it's no use assembling some of the possible ingredients for turning-around a town if you haven't got the right recipe. As last week's Institute of Place Management report on the work of the High Streets Task Force showed, many local authorities are struggling to deliver fully on Levelling Up and commitments because the local knowhow and capacity to work in partnership is lacking. Today -over breakfast- I am presenting my review findings to many of the two dozen civil servants, council officers, local members, busniness representaives and community groups covering #coleraine #ballycastle #ballymoney #portrush #portstewart and #limavardy, who took the time to speak to me. I'll let you know how it goes down! And why the pork pie metaphor? Because I cannot go into a town centre without popping into the local butchers to emerge with a pasty (or pastie here), a sausage roll or a pie (preferably pork!). It's one of my benchmarks of how the town is evolving. Melton Mowbray's pork pies are good; the Suffolk pork in the pies in Beccles Market takes some beating; though my favourite is a warm pork pie with crisp pastry from Skipton! It seems that every town has its own recipe for success!
