In a commentary published in Mongabay, Francisco Souza, Jennifer Tauli Corpuz, Kanyinke Sena and Levi Sucre Romero write about how the voluntary carbon market can work for and support Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs), and them for it, but these communities have not been adequately engaged or consulted to participate in this carbon market. "Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs) are the frontliners of the climate crisis, facing its immediate impacts to their ancestral livelihoods while also being fundamental stewards of our world’s natural carbon sinks and ecosystems. Indigenous peoples make up around 15% of the world’s extreme poor and just 5% of the global population. Yet we protect and manage approximately 40% of the planet’s ecologically intact landscapes, including the protection of the vast majority, in some cases up to 80%, of the world’s remaining biodiversity. The reality, however, is that from 2011 to 2020, less than 1% of official development assistance for climate change, and less than 5% of official development assistance for general environmental protection, was delivered to IPs and LCs’ tenure and their territorial resource management. It is critically important that more inclusive multisectoral efforts are developed toward accelerating high-integrity climate solutions (genuine and verifiable emission reductions) and finance that recognize and respect IPs and LCs’ rights and livelihoods and incorporate IPs and LCs-led activities." https://lnkd.in/eVt2hEY7

Our industry is full of myths and misinformation, like how nature based carbon credits are cheap because they're low quality. Such narratives are not only unhelpful, they're also inaccurate. To quote from Nature4Climate's latest white paper: "The current low price of nature-based carbon credits does not accurately reflect the quality of the credit, rather the complexities of a nascent market...When done right, high-quality nature-based carbon credits deliver a range of social and environmental benefits in addition to climate action, unlike many higher-priced, technology-based carbon credits." It's time to bust the myths that are discouraging individuals, corporates and governments from investing in a nature positive future. Natural climate solutions like conserving forests could deliver up to one-third of the emissions reductions required by 2030 to stay on track with the Paris Agreement. The voluntary carbon market—when done right—is one tool to shift finance into more sustainable investments. This primer can help USAID Missions effectively navigate the evolving and complex NCS carbon market space and ensure carbon market projects are held to the highest standard in terms of transparency and results. https://lnkd.in/eHmP-yY8

"There isn’t enough space in the world to plant all the trees required." "Regenerative farming is prohibitively expensive and won’t make enough of a difference." "Nature-based carbon credits are cheap because they are low quality." If you ever wondered, why these and many other claims about nature-based solutions are simply untrue and discrediting, you should absolutely have a look at this great white paper published by Nature4Climate #NatureBasedSolutions #Decarbonization #NetZero

WOC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Ocean-Based Climate Solutions, Inc. 🌊 The World Ocean Council membership brings together a diverse range of companies and finance firms of all sizes, from across the sectors and around the world in the only global Blue Economy Business and Investment Organization. It's our pleasure to introduce Ocean-Based Climate Solutions, Inc. whose mission is to mitigate the effects of climate change and make oceans healthy. How? Ocean-based Climate Solutions uses wave power to mix deep ocean water, chock full of nutrients not present in the surface waters of the high seas, to grow phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are tiny drifting plants that soak up CO2 and feed marine life. Naturally, when phytoplankton die or are eaten and pooped, they sink, locking up that CO2 in the deep ocean. On Sunday, December 10, Ocean-based Climate Solutions, participated in a webinar arranged by Carbon Removals at COP, that focused on exploring the potential of ocean wave-driven upwelling pumps as a tool for climate mitigation by mimicking natural processes to draw down CO2 from the atmosphere into the ocean. 🚀 Learn more about https://ocean-based.com/ With members such as Ocean-Based Climate Solutions, Inc., the World Ocean Council has created the only global platform built by and for the private sector, with a network of 35,000 companies, finance firms, entrepreneurs, business associations, media, etc. focused on ocean sustainability. 🌐 We invite companies, finance firms, entrepreneurs, and industry associations to join the WOC and collaborate in Corporate Ocean Responsibility leadership. Sustainability Policy and Advocacy Strategy Director EMEA Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics at The Dow Chemical Company
The European Environment Agency has published this week the first progress report on the climate and environmental objectives of the 8th Environment Action Programme (8EAP) highlighting what needs to be done to achieve the EU’s 2030 environmental targets, key towards net zero #GreenDeal Ambition. Report concludes that EU might not meet most of the monitoring targets. Despite progress made in areas including greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, greening finances and the overall economy, more effort is needed to achieve systemic change across systems (food, energy, mobility, trade, buildings etc.) and ensure wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries. Great to see #circulareconomy confirmed as key lever towards a more resilient, sustainable and net zero EU economy. Unlocking the value from waste used as secondary raw materials replacing virgin primary ones will enable a more sustainable production and will boost economy competitiveness, resilience and strategic autonomy while tackling the tripe planetary crisis on waste, biodiversity and climate change.
