The temporary duration of employment, lack of authority, fear of retaliation and general lack of PoSH awareness makes interns vulnerable at workplaces. A 2021 survey revealed that 47% of interns do not have a clear understanding of their rights under the PoSH Act! While 63% of them felt they were more vulnerable at workplaces, 20.7% were unsure whether their organization had an anti-sexual harassment policy and 46.5% were unsure whether their organization had an Internal Committee! Scary stats aside, internships are an exciting opportunity to gain professional experience. Though they are temporary positions, interns are entitled to the same protection as all employees. Interns have the right to speak up against any form of sexual harassment they encounter. They can report incidents to the Internal Committee (IC), and seek a fair and impartial investigation as mandated by the PoSH law. Interns at Voice of SASHA created a resource in 2021 for interns to navigate workplaces and understand how to address #sexualharassment. https://lnkd.in/gfq_Aqv4 Follow us for more! #workplacesafety #internship2024 #employeerights #poshawareness #poshact #poshcompliance #poshtraining

As a working class professional you face a particular set of challenges. You didn’t go to a posh school. You don’t have the right accent. You don’t have the confidence those other leaders appear to have. We know how an accent makes you stand out. So even having this job you do is an achievement. It leaves you feeling bewildered at times, helpless in the face of a host of unwritten rules. I’ve got a Geordie accent. Didn’t go to University let alone a posh school. I understand how this is such a significant challenge when building a career in culture. Like it or not, snobbery towards working class in this country is real. There's plenty of evidence to back that up but nothing as powerful as the lived experience. It will be denied, evidence will be shown to dispute this. Yet when you come from a working-class background, you know, in small and subtle ways, how true this is. Its complex. It’s a unique mix of external and internal challenges which means you have to work harder than the rest. Yet you make progress, you succeed, and you can see how you are at least as talented as that posh boy from the public school. Yet he gets the big jobs, the best opportunities. It’s not fair, it’s not right. The system is stacked, yet you’re told it’s not. Looking back I can see how I might have changed my approach to put myself in a better position to succeed. In the moment though that is tough. That’s why a conversation might help. Message me.

The Ethicist on Privilege in Hiring Decisions The latest New York Times Ethicist column dives into whether personal circumstances should influence intern evaluations. The Ethicist argues that evaluations should consider an individual’s future performance while also weighing the benefits of a diverse team. Why It’s a Must-Read: Having led Equitable Hiring Strategy at Indeed, I can tell you this column’s insights are right on point. “Objective” measures are often tinted by personal and societal biases, so factoring in an individual’s experience in achieving those objectives is crucial. What’s more, we know that organizations with diverse teams achieve more. It’s about setting the bar high but lowering the barriers to reach it. What’s your take on integrating diversity into hiring decisions? Can’t access the article? Shoot me a message—I’ll get it to you. https://lnkd.in/enzXm-mN

I am looking forward to speaking on "The Urgency of Employee Retention" in January at CiderCon® 2024 (a conference put on by American Cider Association, an internship company partner of The Script (formerly Emerging Leaders)). CiderCon® is the premier cider conference for industry professionals. It is an opportunity to learn, share, taste and network. Here is more about my presentation: Recruiting diverse talent is critical. However, retaining employees is even more important to the sustainability of your organization. In this presentation, we take a dive into employee recruitment and retention to discover what is effective and ineffective in your current approach. I will breakdown recruitment and retention efforts to look at the critical elements needed, share lessons learned from managing a successful workforce development initiative, discuss potential pitfalls that can come up and highlight what success looks like for both employees and employers. You will leave the presentation with a renewed understanding of what is needed as you think about creating or enhancing your recruitment and retention approach. For more insight about the American Cider Association (ACA): The ACA is an organization of cider and perry producers in the United States. Their mission is to grow a diverse and successful U.S. cider industry by providing valuable information, resources and services to their members and by advocating on their behalf. In the world of investigations, whether it be workplace, campus or Title IX, we often run into situations where two people interpret the same events in wildly different ways. As human beings, our memories can be subjective, and we are constantly interpreting events through the lens of our own backgrounds and experiences. Try it yourself! Read the scenario, take the poll, and determine "Am I Being Reasonable?" https://buff.ly/3yfkwqz #VanDermydenMakus #AIBR
