Veteran LSU running back John Emery left the field midway through Saturday morning's practice and was not able to return after being attended to by a trainer.

Emery, a sixth-year player who is working his way back from a torn right ACL suffered last November, was checked on the ground for several minutes before he got up.

Later, the former five-star from Destrehan High School walked gingerly on the sideline as he tried to stretch the surgically-repaired knee that's protected by a sleek brace. He also rode a stationary bike for a few minutes.

LSU coach Brian Kelly wasn't scheduled to meet with media after Saturday's practice, so there was no immediate update on Emery's status.

When the Tigers opened preseason practice on Aug. 1, Emery was an active participant and was given a heavy workload by design, Kelly said, after that workout.

“He had to cut, he had to be stressed,” Kelly said then. “He’s cleared, so we wanted every rep that he got to be a high-leverage rep. We didn’t want him out there just blocking or taking a rep that didn’t force him to put his foot in the ground and accelerate.

“We want to really stress him in a sense of making sure he feels great with that knee. Because if he feels great, he’s fearless and he’s gonna go.”

LSU can't afford an injury at the position with only three other scholarship backs available in camp and probably for the season — sixth-year player Josh Williams, sophomore Kaleb Jackson and true freshman Caden Durham.
