Is Sports betting legal in Wyoming?

Sports betting is legal in Wyoming and regulated by the Wyoming Gaming Commission. In the spring of 2021, House Bill 133 was signed into law after being introduced just a month earlier. Within five months, and just in time for the 2021 NFL season, the Equality State launched its first two online sportsbooks (DraftKings and BetMGM).

It’s worth noting that, unlike some other states, NFL Draft betting is allowed in Wyoming. For the moment, there are no restrictions on betting like in other places, but Wyoming is considering banning NCAA player props.

In fact, HB 133 also originally failed a house vote, but was reconsidered the next day and eventually passed both chambers, clearing a path for sports betting in the Equality State.

How to start betting in wyoming

Those in Wyoming can bet on sports online, but they don’t have the option of betting in person at a sportsbook window. Betting on a cell phone with one of the state’s five approved sportsbook apps is easy and straight-forward. If you’re at least 18 years old, Just create an account, verify your identity, and start wagering today.

  1. Select a sportsbook

First, decide which sportsbook you want to use and download that sports betting app on your phone. Some sportsbooks will allow you to get started from their website on a computer as well. With the help of this article, make sure the app you’ve chosen is regulated in your state.

  2. Create Account

Click the button on your sportsbooks’s app that says “signup” or “get started,” while you’re inside state lines, to begin creating an account. You’ll be required to fill in some personal information and verify your identity.

  3. Deposit

To fund the account, select the payment option you prefer. Each sportsbook has different options for deposits, but common options include: Credit/debit card, bank transfers, PayPal, etc. Remember to keep an eye out for any fees that might be associated with the deposit.

  4. Choose your bet and bet size

There are a variety of wagering options within each sportsbook. If you’re just getting started, moneylines are the most straight-forward bet and allow bettors to wager on who will win an event. Point spreads, over/unders, parlays, player props and futures bets are also popular choices.

  5. Place a wager

Every sportsbook runs independently from each other so they each may offer different point spreads or odds on the same wager. Before placing your wager, try shopping around at other betting apps to get the best price. Once you’ve found odds you like, type in your wager amount and submit your wager. If your wager wins, your winnings and your original bet will be deposited back into your account shortly after the event you bet on finishes.

  6. Withdraw funds

Each online sportsbook has different methods and processes for cashing out money if you’re successful betting. It’s normal for withdrawals to take longer than deposits, but the money is typically received within a couple days.

Local Teams to bet on

Wyoming isn’t home to any MLB, NFL, NBA, or NHL teams and only two of its six neighboring states have major professional franchises. Residents of Wyoming, or those visiting its beautiful national parks, might find themselves rooting for teams in Colorado and Utah

NBA - Utah Jazz: The Jazz missed the playoffs the last two seasons and are best known for their glory years with John Stockton and Karl Malone when they made it to the postseason 20 seasons in a row. Utah’s last two seasons have been a struggle as the Jazz finished 31-51 last season after a 37-45 campaign in 2022-2023.

NBA - Denver Nuggets: Bettors in Wyoming can get down on Nikola Jokic props throughout the season as the Nuggets’ star can always be counted on for an MVP-caliber season. The Nuggets have made it to the playoffs six seasons in a row after zero playoff appearances from 2013 to 2018 and won it all in the 2022-2023 season.

NFL - Denver Broncos: Some fans in Wyoming may have Coach of the Year tickets on Broncos coach Sean Payton who disappointed last season but won a Super Bowl ring with the Saints in 2010. Fans in Wyoming and Denver are hoping Payton and rookie QB Bo Nix can blossom together like Payton did with Drew Brees.

NHL - Colorado Avalanche: The Avs are one of the more respected NHL franchises with a legitimate home ice advantage and a recent Stanley Cup (2021-2022). The Avalanche have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons.

MLB - Colorado Rockies: Colorado Rockies home games are popular “over” plays for sports bettors because of the high altitude and thin air at Coors Field in Denver. The Rockies have finished under .500 in 11 of their last 13 seasons.

The Wyoming Responsible Gambling Coalition (WRGC) was forged by, among others, the Wyoming Department of Health and the Wyoming Lottery to reduce gambling addiction in the state. A portion of the money collected by the state from gambling profits, goes toward county initiatives that prevent and treat problematic gambling behavior.
