Data Protection and Copyright Policies

Copyright Notice

All content on redandblack.com, including but not limited to text, graphics, photographs, design, code, or archived material, whether generated by employees and staff of the site or by users, is copyrighted by The Red and Black Publishing Company, Inc.

The Red and Black Publishing Company, Inc. is a non-profit corporation based in the state of Georgia, which owns this site and all associated pages or newsletters.

Our Commitment To Privacy

Your privacy and the protection of your personal data is important to us. This notice explains our online information practices and the choices you can make about the way your information is collected and used.

This notice primarily applies to information collected or submitted on the redandblack.com website. Parts of this notice also pertain to information collected and stored regarding The Red & Black alumni and development database, maintained with Bloomerang. Where necessary, differences between the two systems will be noted and explained in detail.

The Information We Collect

On some site pages, you can create an account, make requests, participate in a poll, register for contests and submit content to the site. The types of personal information collected at these pages are: Name, email address, phone number, class standing, or affiliation within our online community. You may submit other types of personal information to fill out your optional profile.

Accounts made on the site are not added or linked to the alumni and development database at this time. Former members of The Red & Black are added to the database upon graduation or similar circumstance, but those individuals may opt out or review their personal data at any point. Information maintained in these accounts is kept secure and stays within high standards of privacy, using the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and the California Privacy Rights Act as guidelines for what information is allowed to be entered into the database.

Individuals not affiliated with The Red & Black in this way are added to database records only when a clear business case can be made. If a clear expression of interest or possible business affiliation with The Red & Black is not found, then all information not needed for future reference will be removed from the database regarding these particular accounts.

The Way We Use Information

If you supply your email address via the site, it will be used only for delivery of the newsletter, and it will never be sold. Email subscribers have the option to opt in for occasional emails with special offers we deliver on behalf of our partners, but we never share email information with second parties.

Persons who supply us with their telephone numbers online will only receive telephone contact from us with information regarding orders they have placed online or to verify identity for content they wish to be published on the site or in the printed editions of The Red and Black. Additionally, if you supply us with your postal address online, you will only receive the information for which you provided us your address.

We use the information you provide about yourself when registering to identify you as a user of the site, to track usage of interactive features, and to communicate with you regarding site news and updates. Information we collect about site users will be disclosed when legally required to do so, at the request of governmental authorities conducting an investigation, to verify or enforce compliance with the policies governing our website and applicable laws, or to protect against misuse or unauthorized use of our website. You can opt out of all newsletters, but you may still receive occasional notices regarding your specific usage of the site. We do not share this information with outside parties. Newsletter subscribers from the site are not signed up for the alumni newsletter unless they have opted to do so as well, and vice versa.

We use non-identifying and aggregate information to better design our web site and to share with advertisers. For example, we may tell an advertiser that "X number of individuals visited a certain area on our website," or that "Y number of men and Z number of women filled out our registration form," but we would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.

Finally, we never use or share the personally identifiable information provided to us online in ways unrelated to the ones described above without also providing you an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prohibit such unrelated uses.

Regarding the alumni and development database, records are used only for alumni engagement and development purposes. Data stored in these records are never used for advertising purposes, and the only third party involvement with these data points at this time is through the database provider, Bloomerang, which maintains robust data privacy and security measures as a data processor, or approved contractors.

Emails from alumni newsletter sign-ups are added to the database, and un-subscribe responses or communication responses are managed via Bloomerang’s systems to ensure proper action when a request is received.

Donations for each fiscal year are listed by name in our annual reports, which are published to the site as PDFs. If you would like for your name to not be included in these reports after donating to The Red & Black, please email [email protected] with your request.

Our Commitment To Data Security

To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online. We conduct thorough reviews of all software that involve or could potentially access personal data, train staff on appropriate cybersecurity and privacy measures, and maintain secure systems for delivering and accessing any document that may contain personal data.

Third-Party Advertising

We and third parties may use cookies and other tracking technologies to facilitate serving relevant ads to you on the website. For example, these technologies help determine whether you have seen a particular advertisement before, tailor ads to you if you have visited our site before, and avoid sending you duplicate ads. You can learn more about certain types of targeted advertising by visiting the Digital Advertising Alliance website.

In addition to disabling cookies and other tracking technologies, you may opt-out of receiving targeted advertising from participating ad networks, audience segment providers, ad serving vendors, and other service providers by visiting websites, such as this one operated by the Network Advertising Initiative.

The alumni database is in no way used with third party advertising services. The only outside entities allowed to access alumni data are Bloomerang and approved contractors.

Our Commitment To Children's Privacy

Protecting the privacy of the very young is especially important. For that reason, we never collect or maintain information at our website or in any database from those we actually know are under 13, and any information regarding those under 18 in general is only maintained with clear compliance and permission from guardians.

How You Can Access Or Correct Your Information

You can access all your personally identifiable information that we collect online and maintain by logging into your account and adjusting your account settings and profile information. We use this procedure to better safeguard your information.

You can correct factual errors in your personally identifiable information by sending us a request that credibly shows error.

To protect your privacy and security, we will also take reasonable steps to verify your identity before granting access or making corrections.

How to Request or Manage Your Personal Data

To request a copy of your personal data collected with the alumni database, please email [email protected]. A representative of The Red & Black will respond to your request in a timely manner and may ask for further details, such as alternate names used or year of graduation, to ensure the proper records are sent. Representatives will take reasonable steps to verify your identity before granting access to any copies of your personal data, which will be secured in a manner explained during this process.

If you would like for us to remove your data from the alumni database, this can also be requested by emailing [email protected]. A representative of The Red & Black will respond to your request in a timely manner and may ask for further details such as alternate names or year of graduation to ensure the proper records are sent. These follow-up questions are to ensure your request is handled as accurately as possible, and any personally identifying  info provided in that correspondence will be deleted once the request is fulfilled.

Upon removal from the database, we will keep only a reference point in the system. This reference point will note that the individual had an account in the database at some point and at what date their record was removed. This process is used to ensure another employee of the company does not re-create the removed record and no further data is logged regarding the individual. At any point, you may rescind your removal request.
