Accessible Accommodations

Compliance with ADA

Consistent with the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act, a Driver Education Provider must make reasonable accommodations and provide aids and services when providing the classroom portion of a driver education course that are necessary to ensure that a student who is deaf or hard of hearing may fully participate in the course.

Online driver education courses must also meet these same requirements.

Plan for Compliance

As part of the original or renewal application to obtain a driver education provider license, the applicant must provide the provider’s plan to make reasonable accommodations and provide aids when necessary.

ASL Course

TDLR has created a driver education course for minors and adults that presents the course curriculum in American Sign Language that will meet ADA requirements.

If you would like to teach this course to students, you will need to contact driver education and safety program staff and state that you intend to provide the course.

For more information, see Offering the American Sign Language Driver Education Course

Online Courses

Online driver education courses are considered to be driver education schools, and are required to make reasonable accommodations for deaf or hard of hearing students.

See section 84.48 of the administrative rules for details.
