Loved the whole experience at this place. We sat at the bar and had the privilege of watching the sushi chef prep the sushi... watching a true master at work. The ginger was prepared by the chef and so fresh. It was unlike any other ginger I've had at a sushi restaurant before. The omakase experience was superb. It was the best sushi I've ever had, and for quite a good value. Went great with the miso soup and hot sake. The family that runs the place treated us like guests at their home for dinner. I'll make sure to have dinner here every time we're up in this area.

Since Yelp doesn't do half stars, I must clarify that I would give this place a 3.5 stars out of 5.

I've seen this place time and time again on Instagram but never could bite down on the long drive over from Richmond. However, I happened to be in the area this time and was finally able to try this quaint little sushi shop. As mentioned, it is run by an elderly Japanese couple with limited English. Reservations are highly preferred due to limited seating and even if it is seemingly empty, the grandpa behind the counter may wave you off with his hand (as I had witnessed first hand) at his discretion.

Someone else in the reviews mentioned liking the rice and I agree on this one! I liked the temperature and softness of the rice and it paired very nicely with all the nigiri. The fish I would say is not top notch but still good quality. I am quite sensitive to the taste of fishiness (yes I know it's funny to say that about....well literal fish) and can be picky with fish but everything was good. For the price, this is good sushi I would say.

The power went out halfway through eating which was kinda funny but they handled it just fine and dinner went on with no hitch.

Overall, I would say this place is a nice little nook and cranny to check out if you're in the area but I'm not sure if I would specifically trek out from Richmond for it. For the low price, you can expect decent food but there won't be much service or ambiance with it.

Don't let this plain looking mom-n-pop shop fool you from having some great sushi. At $40/pp for an Omakase, you really can't complain. The service can be slow at times, but adds to the charm of the place.

As you sit watching the chef slice through hunks of fish, your mouth just waters as you enviously watch others have their fill before the chef finally gets to you. I highly recommend sitting at the bar and interacting with Toshi-san. Though his English may not be the best, his genuine intentions are well communicated through sign language, and of course his sushi.

Definitely recommend getting the Omakase. Worth every penny. Do have to say that you will leave smelling a little fishy. Perhaps why I couldn't give a higher rating, still a very honest and modest spot for a decent Omakase experience!

Tried the $35 omakase at Matsuzushi and unfortunately wasn't a big fan. The set came with miso soup and 10 pieces of nirgiri plus a temaki cone. For the price paid, it was not very filling and I feel like you could get better omakase for $35 at other places.

I would only recommend coming here for their regular sushi. It's also a really small shop just run by your local grandma and grandpa

Really torn writing this review because the owners are old and it feels mean to do this.

Sushi rice is one of the best I've had anywhere.

-The omakase is absolutely not worth $40. The fish is not expertly cut, not the best cuts, very mediocre fish. The standouts are of course the bluefin, ahi, what seemed like hamachi and the uni. Other than that, one of the fish was so unappetizing I had to spit it out. The hand roll was small and had a good portion of ingredients with rice and was delicious. Also inconsistent amount of wasabi in each piece. Had to scrape a bunch of because it was light on some and too heavy on others etc.
      - negitoro and the California rolls were both delicious.
      - battera was mediocre and way too much rice.
      - salmon sashimi had two cuts and was really fresh and delicious.
      - milt (sperm) dish was very, very bland even with the provided sauce so I had to add soy sauce.
      - the miso black cod piece was really tiny for the price, underseasoned and also an odd cut of fish. Not worth the price.

      The three major complaints are:

      - the food takes forever because it's one sushi chef and all the hot food is made by the person/team in the back. Because it's one sushi chef, it meant all our food came at different times. The longest taking over 30mins from the last dish. So we were all eating at different times. People who came in 30 mins after us were being served the omakase at the same time because it was easier for him to make 3 of those than just one. So they didn't wait as long.

      - refills for tea or water are hard to come by. They only refilled it once during our entire meal and only half full.

      - the wood serving platter for the assorted sashimi was covered in mold. Watching it, I felt terrible. Two tables had ordered it so we saw both go out and it was black, black, black. They should really throw those out and not be using it.

I would eat here again and stick to the dishes that were good and also recognizing that if it's busy, it's a loooooong wait. I'd say compared to other sushi places in Port Moody, this is the most authentic and you won't find any funky sauces or rolls with mango on it.

      Free street parking out front.

By far THE best omakase restaurant for the value, not just in town, likely across the North American continent. For the 11-piece menu that you're treated to, you'd likely pay 3-10x the price anywhere else. But don't let the cheaper price fool you. The fish is just as fresh and melts in your mouth. Highly recommended to try this small but quaint location out for your next sushi fix.

I have been visiting Matsuzushi since it was part of Japanese grocery store near North Road almost 30 years ago. It is run by elderly Japanese couple and the chef can make filet a fish and make sashimi in his sleep and he probably does. One of the hidden gems, hole in the wall place that only the true locals know. But, if you dont behave, too loud, or dressed too naughty, he simply may not accept you saying it is full - although it is empty :)
They are running this restaurant like a community service - not for money. Be respectful, be patient and make reservation.

I came on a weekday around dinner time and this cute little sushi restaurant wasn't too busy. There were still a couple of tables left. I ordered the deluxe 8 piece nigiri set with 3 pieces of California roll ($25). I was surprised that I found a bone in one of the fish. The owner saw this but didn't say anything. Instead he gifted a small marinated dish. I'm not sure if everyone receives this but I was thankful.

Had the Omakase at the sushi bar with the chef and it was a great experience as usual. Had a variety of higher end fish. I feel a lot of them tasted the same but very fresh. We had salmon, flounder, aji mackerel, hamachi, hotate, ebi, toro and uni from what I can remember. Just like last time, they do the sushi rice so well here. These decor is a bit tired but the food is delicious. The service is a bit slow but it is a mom and pop shop.

Talk about the bang for the buck! It was so hard to make a reservation for this place and I just kept trying and finally got through, so worth it and I'm so glad I was able to take my friends to their first omakase experience even if it was a little untraditional where they aren't making it in front of you. Because we had such a large party, we weren't able to be seated at the bar with the chef, it was a party of 5. Which is understandable because it is a really small mom and pop shop.
Because it was family owned the service was a bit slow for all the heavy traffic they were getting but luckily we weren't hangry or in a rush so it was fine at the time at the rate it was going since it was only the chef working as quickly as he can. I def recommend if you want to have a fun experience and to chill with your friends. Again BANG FOR THE BUCK!

Adorable owners. Older couple run the restaurant. Friendly service and the food was fresh. We got the omakase and every piece was super fresh and tasty. Also got the lunch combo with the chicken teriyaki. Very reasonably priced for both items. Tasty and affordable.
