Inflation in the United States cooled in June for a third straight month, a sign that the worst price spike in four decades is steadily fading and may soon usher in interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. In a better-than-expected report, consumer prices declined 0.1% from May to June after having remained flat the previous month, the government said Thursday. Measured from 12 months earlier, prices were up 3% in June, down from 3.3% in May. The latest inflation readings could help convince the Fed’s policymakers that inflation is returning to its 2% target.

Fewer Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week as the labor market remains sturdy despite high interest rates. The Labor Department reported Thursday that jobless claims for the week ending July 6 fell by 17,000 to 222,000 from 239,000 the previous week. The total number of Americans collecting unemployment benefits declined for the first time in 10 weeks. About 1.85 million Americans were collecting jobless benefits for the week of June 29, 4,000 fewer than the previous week. Weekly unemployment claims are widely considered as representative of layoffs.

In a statement Saturday, Laura Kavanagh didn't say when she plans to step down, but she said she will spend the next several months helping with the transition in leadership. Kavanagh says she made the decision over the last month, calling it a hard one. Mayor Eric Adams, who appointed her in October 2022, called Kavanagh a trailblazer and said it was her decision to leave the job.

Alec Baldwin has made his first public comments since the stunning early end to his trial in the killing of a cinematographer in New Mexico. Baldwin says in an Instagram post Saturday that there “are too many people who have supported me to thank just now” and "you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family.” The post was accompanied by a photo of the actor in a Santa Fe, New Mexico, courtroom, where a day earlier a judge threw out the involuntary manslaughter case against him. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled that prosecutors wrongly withheld ammunition evidence from Baldwin's defense team.

A nearly three-year legal saga for Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer has ended without a verdict but with tears of relief for the actor and a small coterie of family who had settled into a somber routine inside a windowless New Mexico courtroom at trial. Inside the court, jurors dutifully scrawled notes and listened with steepled hands. But they were sent home early Friday as the criminal case against Baldwin collapsed amid gasps in the courtroom gallery and accusations that prosecutors “buried” evidence about ammunition.

The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse is in danger of toppling into the water, and advocates for the 150-year-old lighthouse in the middle of Hudson River are urgently trying to save it. Turbulence from passing commercial ships is speeding the deterioration of its wooden supports below. The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society is raising money to place a submerged steel curtain around the lighthouse. The ambitious preservation project could cost up to $10 million. The threat is so great the National Trust for Historic Preservation has placed the lighthouse on its 2024 list of the country's most endangered historic places.
