European Multi-stakeholder Forum for Social Transition and Agenda 2030: “Leave no one behind”

LRG ecosystem commitments for an European Pact for the SDGs

The European Committee of the Regions, in partnership with PLATFORMA, is pleased to host the launch of the European Multi-stakeholder Forum for Social Transition and Agenda 2030, organized by the Basque Government Delegation to the EU and international and european stakeholders.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all in a global partnership. It is imperative to combine efforts and work collectively to achieve them. With only six years left to go for 2030, the world needs all hands on deck, working together and working faster, at scale. The multi- stakeholder dimension is missing at the EU level, and to promote an inclusive multi-stakeholder platform with the commitment to “Leave No One Behind", with long term visioning that goes beyond 2030, can generate a driven forces and capitalizing the European local and regional ecosystem commitments.

The 2024 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), and a lead up to Summit of the Future, will be held under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, under the moto "Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions" with the aim to support the implementation of the Political Declaration and other outcomes for advancing the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

Within this context and inspired by the successful Basque country´s Forum created in 2022, and grounded on the principles of the Dublin declaration, the European Multi-stakeholder Forum for Social Transition and Agenda 2030 aims to foster multi-stakeholder collaboration and dialogue between European actors to address social and environmental challenges, aligned with the Agenda 2030. It seeks to establish LRG intersectorial and inter-institutional governance mechanisms to facilitate public, private, academic, and civil society collaboration and participation. This will allow effective cooperation between all European entities involved in answering the concrete SDGs challenges.

With the proposal to align with the European Commission and the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Committee agendas and collaboration, the European Forum for Social Transition and Agenda 2030 aims to capitalize on the work carried out through LRGs and CSO and their pan-european associations and confederation, recognizing the fundamental role of territories, as well as civil society and non-state actors, to promote policy coherence for sustainable development. Bearing in mind that the current and future global challenges can only be addressed by harnessing the power of LRGs at the level closest to citizens. This initiative could serve as the cornerstone for driving a European Pact for the SDGs, drawing inspiration from various European initiatives like the Pact for Skills and others, and their concrete commitments, results and impact.
