PACIFIC PALISADES, CA — Two lanes were opened in each direction on a portion of Pacific Coast Highway Thursday as construction continues on roadwork in response to the Tramonto Slide, according to Caltrans.

Construction will continue until at least Friday to place a K-rail at the base of the slide, located near Porto Marina Way, and to place more signs.

Two lanes will be open in each direction during the day. One lane will remain open in each direction from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Caltrans said.

Additional overnight work and lane closures could continue next week.

Construction started Thursday on a project to create a second lane on northbound PCH at Porto Marina Way, north of Sunset Boulevard. The right lane was closed for safety due to the Tramonto Slide in February, which was made worse by a series of subsequent storms.

The project will see both northbound and southbound lanes shifted toward the beach to the shoulder of the current southbound lanes.

The fix is only temporary, Caltrans said. The slide area, referred to as the Tramonto Slide, has been an issue for years and needs a complex fix in order to be permanently addressed.

Construction will include removing the existing curb along the southbound shoulder, removing existing pavement delineation, markers, markings and realigning lanes around the slide area, grinding, repaving, restriping and placing K-rail at the toe of the slide.

The total cost for the lane realignment project is estimated at $3.35 million, according to Caltrans.
