PACIFIC PALISADES, CA — Improvements are coming to the problematic intersection at Sunset and Chautauqua Boulevard. Councilmember Mike Bonin announced Monday morning the Los Angeles Department of Transportation had installed a new left-turn phasing signal at the intersection, which will facilitate safer turns from Sunset Boulevard onto Chautauqua Boulevard.

LADOT also improved visibility at the already existing crosswalk, hoping to make it easier for oncoming cars to see pedestrians who are crossing the street.

"The new signal will improve safety for everyone who uses the road, and also help traffic move more efficiently on the often-crowded street, making it much easier for drivers to safely turn when turning west from Sunset onto Chautauqua headed south, where there is a curve that prevents them from seeing oncoming traffic," Bonin said. "LADOT crews also upgraded an existing crosswalk to enhance visibility for drivers as pedestrians cross the intersection.

The Sunset / Chautauqua Boulevard intersection has long been considered a danger point in the Palisades, especially in the aftermath of a 2017 motorcycle crash that took the life of 36-year-old David Babalyn of Reseda. Three other motorcyclists were injured in the collision, after their bikes collided with a car being driven by a 16-year-old teenager.

Last year, LADOT Senior Transportation Engineer Tim Fremaux revealed possible changes for equally problematic PCH at Chautauqua Boulevard intersection, which include new lane markings, signage and changes in turning lanes.
