Palm Desert Cancer Advocate Honored Posthumously

at Cancer Action Day at the Capitol

(Sacramento, Calif.) – April 24, 2018. Palm Desert volunteer cancer advocate Beverly Cooley received the highly coveted Capitol Dome Award posthumously during this year’s Cancer Action Day at the Capitol in Sacramento April 17, 2018. Presented by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the prestigious award places Cooley in the top tier of cancer advocacy leaders in the nation.

“Many lawmakers in the California State Legislature and on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., have been moved by Beverly’s passion and her personal experience with cancer,” said ACS CAN California Managing Director Jim Knox. “She was the ultimate embodiment of effective advocacy, hardworking and selfless with a unique talent for phone banking. In fact, she typically made more calls than any volunteer in the state including during the recent Proposition 56 tobacco tax campaign in 2016.”

Cooley passed away in February of this year. As a cancer survivor, she also volunteered for the American Cancer Society for nearly two decades for programs like Relay For Life, Look Good Feel Better, Reach To Recovery, the Wig Bank as well as a general office volunteer.

You can join other volunteers at the next Relay For Life is the Relay For Life of Coachella Valley on November 3, 2018. Contact the Palm Desert Office at 760.340.1597 for more information.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.acscan.org.
