15 San Diego Area Students Named National Merit Scholarships Winners

The students received awards worth $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years at the institution financing the scholarship.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Fifteen high school students in San Diego County received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday.

The San Diego area winners were among more than 2,900 high school seniors nationally who won awards financed by about U.S. colleges and universities. The awards range from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years at the institution financing the scholarship.

This year, 149 higher education institutions are underwriting awards
through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 77 private and 72 public institutions located in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

This is the third announcement of winners in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program.

In April, about 770 high school seniors nationally won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by 94 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations, including 13 high school students in the county.

In May, 2,500 high school seniors nationwide won $2,500 National Merit Scholarships, including 29 high school students in the county.

An additional group of college-sponsored scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients to more than 3,600.

By the conclusion of this year's competition, more than 6,870 high school seniors will receive National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $26 million.
