SAN DIEGO, CA — The mock trial team at Torrey Pines High School topped 37 other San Diego area high school teams to win the 18th annual San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition.

Nearly 750 students participated in the program, which concluded Tuesday and took place at the San Diego Superior Court's Central Courthouse.

The annual event, which is organized by the Mock Trial Committee, provides high school students with the opportunity to experience the legal field in courtrooms rather than classrooms, according to San Diego County Superior Court. The student teams take on the roles of lawyers and witnesses facing off on a hypothetical case in front of actual state and federal judges.

A total of 64 judges presided over trials throughout the competition. An additional 79 volunteers served as courtroom monitors.

Torrey Pines High School will represent the county in the California Mock Trial Competition in March in Los Angeles.
