SAN MARCOS, CA — The University of Saint Katherine is shutting down indefinitely and filing for bankruptcy, it was announced Thursday.

The private university, which is located in San Marcos, has ceased all operations.

In an email to staff, founder and president Frank Papatheofanis said the university "can no longer meet its financial obligations because of a steep shortfall in operating cash," The Coast News reported.

The university's Athletic Department confirmed the news on its website.

"Earlier today, April 25, we learned the University of Saint Katherine has ceased all operations, effective immediately," a statement said. "Our hearts break for our student-athletes at the conclusion of their Firebird careers, and we pray for their continued success as they move forward."

The university's beach volleyball team is currently competing in the NAIA National Invitational and will continue to do so, according to the website.

"This website will continue to share the accolades won by our teams," a statement said. "Our student-athletes have worked hard this season, and we hope to provide them with the recognition they deserve."
