Southergill tried to enlist in the Navy just before Pearl Harbor, but was rejected due to a stutter. He eventually joined the Connecticut State Guard and became a member of the 150th Combat Engineer Battalion.

Southergill helped build roads, destroy and build bridges and disabled land mines to clear the advance for infantry across Europe in World War II. He did his duty in England, France, Belgium and Czechoslovakia. He also particpated in the invasion of Normandy and received five Campaign Stars, the Purple Heart and Good Conduct decorations.

“Norm is an incredibly special individual who fought for our country, survived unimaginable situations, and lived to tell his story and leave a lasting impact on everyone he touches,” Witkos said. “I am honored to be in his presence and listen to his account firsthand, and I want to make sure the entire community knows about this outstanding local hero and all he did for our nation.”

Southergill published A Combat Engineer Remembers in 2006. The book is about his service in World War II.
