CANTON, CT — A major bridge project starts next week, resulting in the closure to through traffic of a major roadway in town for much of the year.

Local officials this week said Old Canton Road will be closed to traffic so Dayton Construction Inc. can replace the bridge over Rattlesnake Brook on Old Canton Road.

The existing bridge will be closed and demolished, with a new one constructed.

Old Canton Road will be open to local traffic only, which in this case refers to residents of the street on both sides of the bridge for the duration of the project.

Vehicles will only be able to go as far as the bridge when traveling from East Hill Road or Route 44, there will be no through traffic.

The bridge itself will be inaccessible.

The project is slated to start Monday, March 18, and last to Nov. 30, although the contractor will work to have the bridge opened sooner if possible.

A detour route will be in place, and motorists are asked to look for the detour signs which will be set up this week.
