Why Not Cut Staff? The Library Already Did!

“Cut the staff!” wrote a nay-sayer to the Palatine Library referendum on
social media. Well, the Library has already cut into its staffing.
Actually, Palatine Library is the leanest library around – they have cut
everything they could.

And, despite having the second-largest population, Palatine Public
Library has a staff smaller than libraries that serve smaller
communities. Our Library serves a population of nearly 90,000 people
with a staff of 1.2 employees per 1,000 people. Compare that to
Arlington Heights Memorial Library, which serves a population of just
over 75,000, and has a staff of 3 employees per 1,000 people.

Really, the Library has been quite frugal. They are asking for quite a
modest raise – for the average assessed home in Palatine, it comes out
to about a dollar a week. After 44 years without an operating increase,
it’s time to Vote Yes on April 2!
