SHREWSBURY, MA β€” The state on Thursday revealed recipients of the latest round of MassWorks infrastructure grants, and Shrewsbury got two awards.

The two awards β€” $300,000 each β€” will help pay for two big projects in town: expanding water and sewer along Clinton and Holden streets; and the improvement of sewer lines along Route 20.

The grants will mean a possible redevelopment of the Worcester Sand and Gravel site off Route 70, and will support future developments along Route 20.

β€œThe sewer expansion design along Clinton Street will promote new development to occur at the Worcester Sand and Stone property, an area targeted for economic growth, as well as preserve the natural resources surrounding the Lake Quinsigamond area, reducing the number of septic systems," Assistant Town Manager Kristen Las said. "The sewer expansion design along Route 20 will allow for targeted growth and redevelopment along the corridor and allow existing properties with septic systems to tie into the sewer system."

MassWorks grants are the largest capital improvement awards offered by the state. The pair awarded to Shrewsbury come through the Community One Stop for Growth program.

"The infrastructure investments on Clinton and Holden Street will ensure high quality water in the town and redundancy during unforeseen circumstances. The Hartford Turnpike sewer upgrades will support our existing, and allow for future, developments in this critical corridor," state Rep. Hannah Kane, R-Shrewsbury, said.

The Shrewsbury Select Board has already voted to endorse the grants.
