SHREWSBURY, MA — With arctic air headed to the area on Friday and Saturday, there are two main places in Shrewsbury residents can go to get warm during daytime hours.

According to current forecasts, Friday will begin with frigid temperatures in the mid-teens before dropping below zero after sunset. The cold will be accompanied by gusting winds that could draw temperatures down to around -30 during the overnight hours.

According to Shrewsbury Deputy Fire Chief Seth Colby, the town typically only opens emergency shelters for major events — like a widespread power outage. Although wind gusts are expected to be in the 40 mph range Friday, the town is not expecting any large outages.

During the daytime, Shrewsbury residents who need to warm up can head to the Shrewsbury Public Library, 609 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Shrewsbury Council on Aging will also be offering indoor programs on Friday. The COA also meets regularly with older town residents to ensure they have the resources to make it through extreme weather events, Colby said.
