Flooding Closes Fayette Avenue In Wayne

WAYNE, NJ — Flooding along the Pompton River has closed a road near a Wayne Township park, said police on Monday.

More rain is in the forecast, swelling the already-high rivers which run through Passaic County.

Fayette Avenue is fully closed between Mountain View Boulevard and C.R. 679, township police said. The road was "impassable" at Fayette Park on Monday afternoon, police added.

The Pompton River peaked at 15.31 feet on Monday and is expected to lower on Tuesday and Wednesday according to the forecast hydrograph. However, the Passaic River crested over the flood stage level of 8.5 feet at Two Bridges (Singac) and is expected to peak above the flood stage of 7 feet at Little Falls.

Parts of Wayne saw about 2.36 inches of rain from Friday through Sunday, with others measuring closer to 1.75 inches from a series of storms this weekend.

There is a good chance for more rain in the township Monday night and over the next few days, said forecasters. This could elevate the Passaic and Pompton Rivers and potentially causing more flooding. The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for the township and other parts of Passaic County.

Both the Passaic and Ramapo rivers are expected to reach peak water levels on Tuesday afternoon, added Wayne police.

More than three inches of rain fell in Clifton, and in Ringwood and west Paterson residents saw more than two and a half inches of rain according to the NWS.
