UNION COUNTY, NJ — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Union County on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall from thunderstorms moving through the area.

The warning, issued about 2:20 p.m., is in effect until 5:30 p.m.

The weather service said thunderstorms have produced heavy rain, with up to 1.5 inches having fallen as of 2:20 p.m. Rain is expected to fall at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, the service said.

"Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," the alert said, based on the service's radar observations.

Small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, as well as areas that drain poorly and low-lying areas all are at risk of flash floods from excessive runoff from heavy rain, the service said.

Affected towns include: Summit, Union, Westfield, Cranford, Hillside, Roselle, Roselle Park, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Kenilworth, Mountainside, Garwood and Springfield.

"Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," the weather service said. "Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads."
