Flash Flood Warning, Road Closures In Westfield

Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have already fallen in Union County and additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible.

WESTFIELD, NJ — A flash flood warning has been issued for Westfield and Union County on Monday.

The National Weather Service(NWS) issued a flash flood warning through 10:45 a.m. on Dec. 18 and a flood watch through 5 p.m.

Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have already fallen in Union County. And additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring, according to NWS.

Flash flooding could impact small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Road Closures

  • Scotch Plains - Route 22 West at Bonnie Burn West, West Broad between Hetfield and White Oak, Lamberts Mills Road
  • Clark - The following roads are closed due to flooding: Walnut Ave in the area of the parkway bridge, Oakridge Road from Lake Ave to the Edison border, Gibson Blvd and School St.
  • Rahway - Avoid the areas of St. Georges Ave between New Brunswick Ave and Central, Inman Ave between Madison Ave and New Brunswick

Rivers

Green Brook at Seeley Mills is at 5.92 feet high (minor flooding) and the Rahway River at Springfield is at 8.79 feet high (moderate flooding stage).

Upcoming Weather

Monday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 p.m., then a chance of rain between 1 and 4 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Temperature falling to around 51 by 1 p.m. Breezy, with a south wind 9 to 14 mph becoming west 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 36. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.
