Long Island Weather: More Than 16,000 Power Outages Monday

LONG ISLAND – More than 17,000 PSEG Long Island customers were without power Monday afternoon as damaging winds pounded the area.

As of 3:32 p.m., the PSEG outage map shows 17,354 outages. More than 13,000 of the outages are in Suffolk County, with the towns of Brookhaven, Islip and Smithtown hit especially hard.

"Some repair work may be delayed until hazardous winds have subsided and because of new health best practices, such as social distancing," PSEG says. "We also expect a limited ability to bring in crews from other utilities."

A high wind warning is in effect until Monday night. Gusts up to 70 mph are possible.

At 1:16 p.m., a buoy 30 nautical miles south of Islip recorded a wind gust of 76 mph.

"Be on alert for strong and damaging winds across Long Island the next few hours," the National Weather Service says.


The full forecast:

Monday afternoon: Showers. High near 57. Very windy, with a south wind 34 to 41 mph, with gusts as high as 65 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday night: Showers likely, mainly before 7pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 44. Windy, with a southwest wind 16 to 26 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 44 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Northwest wind 9 to 14 mph.

Tuesday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers after midnight. Increasing clouds, with a low around 40. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. North wind 7 to 13 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Thursday: A 30 percent chance of showers after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 48.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 49.
