Man Saved After Driving Pickup Truck Into Water In Suffolk

The driver suffered a medical event and plunged his truck into the water. An officer rescued the man, dried off, and went back to work.

PATCHOGUE, NY — A man's life was saved after he drove his pickup truck into the water in Patchogue on Monday.

A man was driving along Sunset Lane and River Avenue when he suffered a medical episode, and he plunged his truck into the water at 1:07 p.m., Suffolk police said.

Officer Daniel Elitharp saw the man slumped over in his car. Without hesitating, he jumped into the water and rescued the man, police said. Elitharp dried off and finished the rest of his shift.

The driver was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

"Suffolk County Police officers are trained to respond to any situation and thankfully that training saved a life," the department stated.
