Heat Advisory, Air Quality Alert Issued For Suffolk County

The heat index, or how hot it feels with humidity factored in, is expected to hit the triple digits this weekend.

Welcome to the heat wave. Temperatures rose into the upper-80s in Suffolk County Friday afternoon and it will be even hotter this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisories for county. An advisory will be in effect from noon Sunday until 9 p.m. Monday in western Suffolk and from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday in eastern Suffolk.

The heat index (how hot it feels with humidity factored in) is expected to be near 100 degrees during the afternoon hours when the advisories are in effect.

An air quality alert will also be in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday for the entire island.

When pollution levels are elevated. the New York State Department of Health recommends that people consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. Those who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician.

To reduce the risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, the NWS advises. Heat stroke is an emergency and a call to 911 is warranted if it is suspected.

Friday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 68. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light in the evening.

Saturday- Sunny, with a high near 89. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 71. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph.

Sunday- Sunny, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 99. West wind around 7 mph.

Sunday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 71. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Monday- Sunny, with a high near 88.

Monday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 72.

Tuesday- Sunny, with a high near 89.

Tuesday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 72.

Independence Day- Mostly sunny, with a high near 86.

Wednesday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 72.
