'Significant Travel Delays' Expected for Evening Rush (Thanks, Rain)

Wet weather is moving into the region Tuesday morning, and it plans on sticking around for a couple days.

A pair of storm systems that will impact the area Tuesday into Wednesday night is expected to cause "nuisance-type" flooding on Long Island, the National Weather Service says.

Anywhere from 2-3 inches of rainfall is expected in total, with locally higher amounts, especially for any areas that are hit by a thunderstorm.

On Tuesday, the heavier rain will start to taper off from west to east toward sunset. But the NWS says the evening rush hour will still see significant travel delays due to the rain and ponding on the roadways.

Gusty winds will accompany the rain. Wind gusts of 25-35 mph are likely late Tuesday morning into the early evening with peak gusts of 40 mph possible.

"As of now only nuisance-type flooding is expected in poor drainage areas and in some urban locations that do not drain well," the National Weather Service in New York said on its Facebook page. "However, stay tuned to the forecast because if training develops (areas of heavy rain continuously falling over the same locations) then that would change rainfall impacts."

The NWS is urging residents to clear piles of leaves on or near storm drains to help alleviate any potential flooding.
