Snow Emergency Declared In Patchogue, Cars Ordered Off Roadways

PATCHOGUE, NY — In anticipation of a blizzard blowing through with wind gusts up to 60mph, leaving up to two feet of snow, Patchogue Village officials have declared a snow emergency and are requesting that all vehicles be removed from the village's roadways.

The removal of cars off the roadways will allow better access for emergency services, as well as snow removal crews from the Department of Public Works during and after the storm.

As far as the commercial district is concerned, on-street parking in downtown Patchogue is prohibited from 6 a.m. until about 8 p.m. on Saturday, and the exact timing of the end to the prohibition will be determined "once the worst of the storm ends," Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce Executive Director David Kennedy said Friday.

Anyone with a vehicle parked on any street in the downtown district will be ticketed and towed after 10 a.m Saturday, Kennedy wrote in an email to business members, adding, "please comply with this restriction as this will allow the village to do curb-to-curb clearing of snow and allow parking to return as soon as possible."

He said businesses should make customers aware of the restriction.

"While municipal parking lots will remain open and will be cleared as best allowable by the conditions of the storm, concentration will be on keeping roads clear throughout the storm," Kennedy said. "Parking in municipal lots will be at your own risk."

"This will be a very dangerous storm and it is strongly encouraged you keep your businesses closed until tomorrow/Saturday evening so our Village DPW crews can clear all lots and streets as best possible," he said.

Kennedy urged members to "stay tuned for further updates."

At the county level, Suffolk Legis. Dominick Thorne issued a public service announcement to his constituents in the 5th Legislative District, which includes Patchogue, East Patchogue, part of North Bellport, as well as Coram and Gordon Heights. He urged residents to keep important emergency storm contact information on hand during the storm.
