PATCHOGUE, NY — Presidents Day, Washington's birthday, Lincoln and Washington's birthday — whatever you call it, there's a holiday honoring all the United States' great leaders on Monday, Feb. 15.

Holidays celebrating George Washington, the nation's first president, date back to 1879. Washington was actually born on Feb. 22, 1731, but the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved the commemoration to the third Monday in February starting in 1971. This year's holiday comes a week to the day after Abraham Lincoln's birthday on Feb. 12.

President's Day usually falls during the midwinter recess for New York City public schools, which runs from Feb. 16 to 23 this year. It's also a federal, state and city holiday, meaning government employees get a break as well.
