Woman Fatally Crashes Into Pole After Medical Emergency

The 76-year-old suffered from an apparent medical episode while driving, causing her to crash Sunday evening.

PATCHOGUE, NY — A St. James woman died after suffering from a medical emergency while driving, causing her to crash into a pole in Patchogue on Sunday, according to Suffolk police.

The 76-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Nissan Frontier westbound on Montauk Highway at the intersection of North Prospect Avenue when she suffered an apparent medical episode and veered off the road, hitting a utility pole at 5:10 p.m.

The woman was transported via ambulance to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
