Word of the Week: Biodiversity

A key indicator of a healthy Great South Bay

Among humans, diversity helps us thrive.

If you look at many of the greatest cities of the past and present, they are often so successful as a result of diverse cultures blending together to create something unique and beautiful. The ecosystems of the Great South Bay are no different.

A diverse grouping of different species makes an ecosystem more stable and resilient to pressures. Each species plays its own role in the success of the ecosystem as a whole. If one dies out, the effects will be felt by all of the other species too.

Biodiversity is also what makes the bay so beautiful and beneficial to the community. Imagine our shores being devoid of seashells, and no fresh local seafood! Or not being able to spend days out fishing with loved ones.

Save The Great South Bay volunteers work hard to keep the bay plentiful with the wildlife that makes our home so special. Meanwhile, we continue to fight for nitrogen reduction in our waters to protect the biodiversity and water quality right in our own backyards.
