Big Lots, With 4 Montgomery Co. Locations, Could Close Stores

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Popular discount retailer Big Lots, which has several Montgomery County locations, may shut down some of its local stores in the coming weeks and months.

Up to 40 of its 1,392 stores nationwide are on the chopping block.

Big Lots did not identify the stores to be closed or when they will be shuttered in Tuesday's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

It is also not clear if employees of shut down stores will be terminated or offered posts at other locations.

Founded in 1967, the company operated in its infancy as Consolidated International and operated closeout and discount stores under a variety of names. In 2001, the various store names and company were converted to the single national Big Lots brand.
