Reston Woman's Whitewater Rafting Story Wins Prize In Writing Contest

A Reston woman's account of her trip whitewater rafting the Colorado River snagged the grand prize in Recreation.gov writing contest.

RESTON, VA —Tracy Long of Reston was recently named the grand-prize winner in the annual "Share Your Story" writing contest sponsored by Recreation.gov and Booz Allen Hamilton.

Long was named the contest's grand prize and June winner for her story, “My Brilliant Whitewater Grand Canyon Adventure,” which recounted her experience whitewater rafting with friends on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park. Her story was originally published on June 24, 2023.

Each year, members of the public are invited to submit stories that highlight the meaningful experiences they had visiting America's national parks, forests and recreation locations.

“At Recreation.gov, we strive to empower people to dream, plan, experience and share our nation’s federal lands and waters,” said Tommy Drake, Recreation.gov's program manager said. “As the government’s outdoor recreation system for 14 federal agencies, we welcome the opportunity to encourage visitors to share their memorable experiences which also helps us deliver on our mission to continually improve our service based on what we hear and learn from our users.”

As the grand-prize winner, Long received a gift card from the outdoor adventure store REI and an America the Beautiful – the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.
