I was shocked when my face smelled terrible after using a cleanser in the shower - then I looked inside the bottle. Here's my warning to everyone

An Aussie mum was left horrified after discovering why her face 'stunk' after using facial cleanser - and now she's issued a stern warning against storing products in the shower.

Diana Hasler noticed a 'funky' smell when she went to use her month-old Cetaphil face wash so she opened the bottle to investigate and found it full of mould.

'Friendly reminder, if you keep your face wash in the shower things go mouldy - I know things go mouldy eventually, but I didn't know it would happen so quickly,' she said on TikTok

The mum had used the product several times but simply chalked off the 'odd' smell before deciding to investigate.

'That explains the random breakouts I've been having... now I'm going to check every single day for mould. Do people keep their things in the shower? Just asking for a friend,' Diana said.

The hugely popular Gentle Skin Cleanser from Cetaphil has over 7,000 glowing product reviews online, and even Delta Goodrem is a fan.

However, it is likely the humid shower storage leading to the mould and not product itself.

Many Aussies were quick to share similar experiences with mould growing inside of their products after Diana's video went viral.

Some Australians who use Cetaphil have also reported issues with mould growing inside the bottle after storing it in their showers

'I had this happen with Cetaphil as well, it was disgusting!' one wrote.

Many insisted that Cetaphil wasn't the only brand susceptible to mould, with plenty of others listed as well.

'My CeraVe cleanser had mould after two months of use, thank god the bottle is clear,' one wrote.

Others who were unaware that skincare could go mouldy said they were running to check their bottles, with some claiming they had a 'new unlocked fear'.

Most blamed the heat and humidity in showers, especially ones with poor ventilation.

'I don't keep my face wash in the shower or in warm places,' one woman said.

'Mine are in my cabinet above the basin and are fine,' another agreed.

But one woman thought that new preservatives being used in skincare were the reason behind an increasing mould issue.

'This is now happening across many skincare and cosmetics brands because natural brands did a scare mongering campaign against parabens, and now we're seeing inferior preservatives in products,' one woman theorised.

'I would rather wash my face with preservatives than mould, give me all of the preservatives,' Diana quipped.

A Cetaphil spokesperson told FEMAIL all products are manufactured and tested in compliance with the highest quality standards.

'While it’s impossible to know exactly what happened without examining the product, it is possible for dirt and impurities or external pollution from the ambient air to cause such a problem.'

'To avoid that, consumers should store their products appropriately and avoid unscrewing the cap or pump.'
