Sofia Vergara nabs Emmy nomination for Lead Actress In A Limited Series for Griselda - making her the second Latina to receive the nod after Anya-Taylor Joy

Sofia Vergara has received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for her role in the Netflix series, Griselda.

The actress, 52, received the nomination today after she starred as the real-life Colombian drug lord in the limited, six-episode series.

The nomination makes Vergara the second Latina to have ever been nominated in that particular category. Anya Taylor-Joy, who has Argentinean ancestry, was the first Latina to have been nominated - and then win - in the same category back in 2021 for The Queen's Gambit.

Vergara's competitors are Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country, Brie Larson in Lessons in Chemistry, Juno Temple in Fargo, and Naomi Watts in Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.

The nomination marks the fifth time Vergara has received an Emmy nod. She received nominations for Modern Family for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, however never won.

Vergara played Griselda Blanco in the six-episode series, which tells the story of how Blanco's legendary reign paved the way for the most infamous Colombian cartel.

Speaking about the character Sofia admitted on The Graham Norton Show that she first had the idea for the series almost 15 years ago.

'It is a true story of a woman that no one ever suspected of being one of the biggest drug dealers that ever existed'.

'She created an insane cartel, and I went crazy for the story. She was Colombian, an immigrant, and a very tough ruthless woman. She was a monster. It was the role for me!'.

The stunner, who is known for her iconic accent, also shared the pressure she felt to lose it in order to make it in Hollywood.

'I thought it would not be that hard, that I could do some classes and have any role I wanted. That was not the case – I spent a lot of money and a lot of hours trying and it would get worse. I would go to auditions, and it was horrific.'

She also said she had to hide her curves in order to play the character.

'The hardest thing was that I had to wear a wig, fake teeth, fake nose, and have a plastic forehead. I also had to wear uncomfortable bras that pushed me down to make me look less Latin'.

Adding: 'It was a complicated character for me, but it was my first film in Spanish which was so liberating.'

Vergara sat in a makeup chair for three hours each day to have prosthetics applied to alter her appearance.

'I wanted her to look from that [1970s] era,' the star said at Netflix's FYSEE event, per The Sun. 'But also, she needed to be a [bit sexy]. She needed to have something because she had like three husbands. She could get the guys.'

'The teeth were fake. The nose, like, I had plastic, from here [touching her chin] to here. Over my eyebrows,' she demonstrated for the audience.

'I would tape my boobs and my a**. And they didn't jiggle the a**. And it was [hot] in Los Angeles. I was like dying,' she said.

Her efforts to make the appearance seem genuine came back to haunt her in a painful way.

She decided to alter her posture by hunching over to play Griselda after watching how her aunt walked.

'The third month of doing that, I got up one morning and I couldn't go to work,' she revealed. 'I herniated a disc.'

"At 51, you can not just walk around and put your body in a position [like that] for 16-hour days.

To make it to the end of the shoot, the Emmy nominee got injections from her doctor for the pain.

'I ruined my back, because I'm doing that. The doctors were like, "You're crazy, you have to, at 51, like stretch and do things."'

Still, the actress enjoyed the experience and the opportunity of working with a Colombian director so much, she said she'd do it again, with a few changes.

'I would not do the freaking prosthetics again.' she stated.
