Jordin Sparks says she 'wouldn't be a mean judge' if picked to take over Katy Perry's job on American Idol

Jordin Sparks isn't optimistic about her chances of replacing Katy Perry as a judge on American Idol, but she's still open to the opportunity.

The 34-year-old singer — who won the sixth season of American Idol in 2007 — got candid up about the chance following the departure of Perry, 39, after season 22

'I'm sure they have already picked somebody else by now, but I thought it would make sense,' she said of sitting on the judging panel during an interview with TMZ on Friday.

She continued: 'I'm someone who's already done it, I've been there, I love the show obviously and I love mentoring people coming up in the industry as well. It would have been cool.'

When asked if she would be a 'mean judge,' Jordin replied with a smile, 'No! You can't even ask that, you know Im not going to be mean.'

'But I will be honest, though, nobody gets helped if you don't tell them the truth. So I would be honest but I would be kind.'

With Katy's replacement still unannounced by ABC, numerous A-listers have expressed interest in joining the judges' table, including Jelly Roll and Meghan Trainor.

There could be multiple openings at the judges' table for season 23, as Luke Bryan revealed to Billboard in June that both his and Lionel Richie's positions on the show are uncertain.

Meanwhile, Katy is reportedly blaming others for the lackluster performance of her comeback single, Woman's World, and is urgently seeking a new strategy to salvage her musical return.

The singer released the lead single from her upcoming album 143 last Thursday, but the empowering anthem was swiftly criticized as unoriginal and formulaic.

With the single dropping rapidly on the US iTunes chart less than a week after its July 11 release, Katy is reportedly panicking and insisting her team revamp their strategy to prevent her album from facing a similar fate.

'Katy is freaking out right now because she is very aware of the feedback that Woman’s World is getting,' an insider exclusively told DailyMail.com. 'She is pointing the fingers at everyone but herself, but it is her own fault.'

The source noted that Katy's biggest gamble was reuniting with Dr. Luke, the producer behind her hits like I Kissed a Girl and California Gurls, who has faced allegations of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse from Kesha.

Dr. Luke has denied all accusations, including Kesha's claim that he raped Katy—a claim Katy herself dismissed.

In 2020, a New York state judge ruled against Kesha, finding that her allegations had defamed Dr. Luke, and the decision was upheld by an appeals court in 2021.

Despite a settlement reached between Kesha and Dr. Luke in 2023, many music fans remain critical of artists collaborating with him.

fter DailyMail.com previously revealed that Katy had been warned not collaborate with Dr. Luke for the new album, the source confirmed that the Roar singer had ignored pleas.

'She was insane to think that Dr. Luke was a good idea. She didn’t listen to anyone', the insider stated.

'Instead of diving deep and creating art she put something out that sounded like it could have been on an album of hers from 2010.'
