Madonna has thrown a host of worldwide celebrations to mark her 66th birthday.

The Queen of Pop ventured into her late sixties on Friday, and to mark the even enjoyed a string of celebrations in various locations across Italy.

But the music icon also spent the celebrations for her birthday by heading to an ancient Romana ampitheatre in Pompeii.

According to The Telegraph, Madonna toured Pompeii’s Teatro Grande and met with teenagers involved in the Dream of Flying community project, as she 'aimed to connect' with the UNESCO world heritage site.

The Material Girl singer looked as she saved up a black lace bustier and sheer white organza and lace dress to act as the grand finale outfit.

She wrote on Instagram: 'Back in Italy………… Happy Birthday to ME'

Across the bust of the dress was a black corset that was adorned with a host of medieval style jewellery.  

The Celebration hitmaker showed off her hairdo as she opted to let her thick blonde tresses tumble down as she stuck a smoldering pose in the wedding dress-like gown.

She kept her make up simple, but also opted for a slick of pink lipstick for a dramatic touch.  

Insiders have claimed that the Material Girl singer wants to spend time with her loved ones after suffering a serious bacterial infection last year that forced her to postpone her Celebration Tour. 

A source told The Sun: 'Madonna is living her life to the absolute full and has spent a fortune on this birthday bash to celebrate with her nearest and dearest.

'She had a big scare when she got ill last summer before her Celebration Tour and now wants to embrace every minute.'

'As much as it is about herself, this party and trip is about thanking all of her loved ones for their support and bringing them together. It's going to be a big night.'

The Italian Minister for Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano is also rumoured to be on the guest list, local media has reported.

Just over a year ago, Madonna was rushed to a hospital after being found unresponsive as the result of what was later determined to be a serious bacterial infection.

The songstress was taken to the ICU and had to be intubated, and she later revealed that she was put into a medically induced coma as she battled for her life despite going into lung and kidney failure.
