'We grew up together': Katie Holmes says she gave birth to daughter Suri at the perfect time... as she reflects on family, fashion, and ALMOST missing her big chance with Dawson's Creek

Katie Holmes believes she gave birth to her daughter at the perfect time, because it gave them the opportunity to grow up together.

The former Dawson's Creek actress welcomed Suri, her only child with Tom Cruise, on April 18 2006, when she was 27-years old and seven months away from a doomed six-year marriage to the Hollywood icon.

Now 40-years old and happily raising her daughter alone in New York City, Katie admits that despite the near three decade age-gap they have always complimented one another.

She told the December issue of ELLE UK: ‘I was happy to become a mum in my twenties. It’s been nice that our ages fit... how do I put this? Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match. We kind of grew up together.’

While she keeps a relatively low-profile on America's East Coast, Katie is not exempt from intense media scrutiny - the combined result of a rewarding career in TV and film, and her association with Cruise, a devout Scientologist.

But the actress adopts a rational attitude towards the constant exposure from ever-present photographers.

‘It’s a lot. It’s a lot. Honestly. That kind of attention is... I try to keep it in perspective because it just is what it is,' she explained.

'I try to look nice when I leave the house. I’m very private and quiet, so it’s interesting that there’s that part of my life.’

The desire to always look her best recently divided opinion when she stepped out in a loose-fitting cashmere cardigan and matching bralette.

Pictured hailing a yellow cab with her young daughter, Katie's matching bralette and cardigan combo, from online retailer Khaite, sold out within an hour - leaving the actress completely bemused.

‘I bought it [the bra] because I thought it was cool,' she said. 'The cardigan’s so big, it’s cute to just wear the bra underneath it. I wasn’t expecting it to be something people would talk about.’

Katie became a household name thanks to her reprising role as Joey Potter in groundbreaking American teen drama Dawson's Creek.

But the actress admits her big break almost never happened after she turned down an audition to fulfill her commitment in a high school stage production of musical comedy Damn Yankees.

She explained: ‘I was playing Lola. I even got to wear the feather boa. I thought, there is no way I’m not playing Lola to go audition for some network.

'I couldn’t let my school down... so I told (director) Kevin (Williamson) and (TV network) The WB, “I’m sorry, I just can’t meet with you this week. I’ve got other commitments.”'

Fortunately Katie was given another chance, winning the role she would eventually play for six years before the show finally ended in 2003, changing the lives and careers of everyone involved.

Despite their differing trajectories, the actress - who went on to appear alongside Colin Farrell in Phone Booth and Christian Bale in Batman Begins - recently reconnected with her former cast-mates, 16-year after it went off-air.

'It was really nice. We all went out to dinner and, I think, for all of us to really sit back in amazement that people still watch it and care about it,' she said.

'It was bigger than all of us and we all feel grateful that we got to contribute to it and benefit from it. We all got so many opportunities because of it.’

The actress was speaking as she posed for a stunning photoshoot on behalf of ELLE,  including a colourful cover shot on which she models a tasteful pink co-ord from FENDI.

In a second shot she further enhances her status as a style icon in an edgy leather jacket and matching skirt, also from FENDI, while a third finds her striking a dramatic pose in a daring crop top and high-slung trousers from the Italian brand.

At first glance, the uninitiated could be forgiven for thinking the actress is 20-years younger, despite her 41st birthday coming on December 18.

But while many approach middle-age with a sense of dread, Katie admits her 40s have been one of the most professionally rewarding times of her life.

‘I directed my first film, All We Had, a couple of years ago and I’ve been working to get my second film ready so I’m excited to continue.

'It’s interesting to be 4O, though, because when you’re young, you think, “I’m never going to be 4O!” And then the day comes and it’s like, this is OK. I’m still doing everything I’ve always done.

'I feel happy with where my career is and I’m excited for the projects that I have coming up to come to fruition.’
