“All around Roy were shards of a broken life, not merely a broken heart. Yet who could deny that I was the only one who could mend him, if he could be healed at all? Women’s work is never easy, never clean.” Beautiful, honest, devastating, but somehow hopeful story. Brilliantly titled, it’s a simple story with profound implications. Good people can only get but so far when injustices pile up.
This was a hauntingly gut wrenching book to read. My heart ached for these characters. Jones provides a frightening story of how, for a family of color, your life can change in an instant. With each chapter I asked myself what would I do? It is certainly a book that will make you think about relationships, the institution of marriage, professional goals and defining your life.
Ever since reading Just Mercy I’ve been focused on learning more about our “justice” system. This fictional book shows how the system affects families, aspirations, lives. I appreciated the first person narration and multiple POVs that really tease our the heart break and disruption that occurs not just for the prisoner but for their family. Usually I love Oprah books, this on? Just NO!
Little Roy was gross, if my husband ever talked to me like he talked to the women in his life? We would be done. What was even likable about him?
Everyone was so unlikeable, I love bad guy characters, I root for the underdog, but give me something, anything, other than just being straight up assholes for me to be interested in you.
