I liked the parts with James and Samuel, but the time jumps weren’t great either. I kept losing myself and therefore got jerked out of the story.
I found I was forcing myself to read on, and there are just too many other books.

Going with the old cliche ‘it’s not you it’s me.’ I really enjoyed book 1 and 2. But this one has done what is possibly my least favourite trope in books - a character finds a way to time travel and tries to rewrite history. Aka rewrite the entire 2 last books and the heroes have to stop them. It’s just, if you can’t think of a new story surely don’t continue the series. Don’t use this stupid plot device. Also I think I waited too long between books and I’ve forgotten a lot. I love Wydrin and the others, I’ve given it my best shot but my interest is lost. ...more

First book of 2021, one of my most anticipated reads with numerous 5 star reviews and I cannot finish it.
Ok, so...humour as we all know is hugely subjective. What one person finds hilarious someone else might find silly or callous. I loved Beartown, Us Against You and Britt-Marie was here - all by Backman.
But this novel didn’t have the same feel for me at all. I didn’t find the characters funny or endearing I found them infuriating. The way they spoke to the police officers and to each other - I just wasn’t enjoying myself at all.
I know I am in the minority here. Massively. But I still love Backman, I’m not going to rate this one. And I’m not going to let one dud ruin his other books for me ...more

A couple of quotes I liked.
“The body can be understood as a life support for the brain.”
“Sanity is the thread through the labyrinth of the Minotaur. Once cut, or unravelled, all that lies in wait are gloomy tunnels unfathomable by any map, and what hides there is a beast in human form, wearing our own face.” ...more

They focus on an alcoholic main character, either returning from prison or doing something that will inevitably send him back to prison.
I will say this truly is ‘dirty realism’. The character makes rape jokes, he is sexist and violent. He is depicted well in the sense that I despised him. It’s also highly realistic as there are types of people like this in the world, which is frightening, but true.
I’m still giving a star rating as like I said I’ve read about 10 of these stories and I feel that’s enough to formulate an opinion. It’s not a bad book but I couldn’t stomach it anymore so I’m leaving it here....more

You know when you take a bite out of something and immediately go “ugh, I don’t like that” and pull a face? Well that’s how I’ve felt reading this. I love a good retelling and I’m all for mixing stuff up, but sometimes it’s too much. Merlin is ageing backwards so he is currently a teenager (like really? What a stupid YA thing to do), I liked the idea of Ari (a girl) being the new Arthur. But the whole Sci Fi aspect was again, just too much. I like the old story, this one messed with it a tad over the top for me.

I was getting a lot of warning flags and bad vibes during this book, including:
“recognised the insecurity balanced perfectly between the push-pull of Eliza’s two protective shells: the bitchy attitude and the skimpy clothes. Or maybe only other girls could see it, like those frequencies only dogs could hear.”
“they associated white values with material success, while they seemed to suspect most black kids of being, at worst, drug dealers and, at best, freeloading bohemians.”
“His sense of rhythm was, for lack of a better term, exceptionally not-white.”
“I’m straight but looking forward to my experimental phase.”
The final straw for me was when the trans guy was referred to as “Jess-who-used-to-be-a-girl.”
