Jacob managed to save his brother during book 1, but at a very high cost. This cost is now demanding to be paid and Jacob’s life is on the line. He and his best friend Fox, the shape shifting girl are on a race against time to find the head, hand and heart of a warlock who hides a hidden crossbow, which could be his saviour. Unfortunately, there is a stone man (Goyl) who is also after the crossbow for his own means and is willing to kill Jacob in the process. An action filled fantasy full of dark magic and twisted fairytales! Cannot wait to read book 3....more

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading the Old Kingdom series - though I must admit this last instalment didn’t blow me away as some of the others did. It was enjoyable, and I loved that all our favourite characters are back, Lirael, Sabriel, Touchstone, Sam as well as some new faces.
It took a while for the plot to start, it involved a free magic creature accidentally brought alive by Nicholas Sayre and Lirael’s removal of said creature. From there she takes Nick to her childhood home of the Clayr, those who have the sight and can see the future.
Meanwhile, a young girl from one of the Northern Clans is sent a message to take to Lirael, one she is told is of the upmost importance and from someone close to Lirael. Naturally her journey is fraught with difficulties and dangers and once delivered to Lirael, she and Nick must face a powerful enemy, one it was thought had been defeated previously.
Maybe this series was too long. Maybe a fifth book wasn’t needed as the third one ended so powerfully. There was a fair bit of focus on the romance which is something I’m not interested in and has never really been a theme in the other books. Also the theme of time travel was used, which is also something I don’t like so that didn’t help. Like I said, I still enjoyed it and will keep it for rereads, but compared to the first three books, it pales in comparison. ...more

I am loving this series so much! Clariel is a prequel to The Old Kingdom series, about 600 years earlier.
Clariel likes her life, sure her parents could be a bit more caring and pay a bit more attention, but she’s got her Aunt Lemmin and the wonderful forest she loves to explore. So when her parents decide the family is going to up and move to Belisare, and send her to a ‘finishing school’ Clariel is heartbroken. She cannot bear to be torn away from her beloved forest.

School is no better. She is taught how to pour tea, and the correct way to introduce herself to other noble men and women, as well as the art of charter magic, something she has never thought much of before.
Belisare is full of tension and political intrigue. The King has withdrawn from all duties, and the Governor has taken over without anyone really noticing or calling him out on it. When everything blows up and things get cray, Clariel is moved to her grandfathers house - the current Abhorsen. But she knows it’s just another prison, another blockade keeping her from the forest she desires so badly, so Clariel plans to escape, by any means necessary. Clariel is different to the previous books I’ve read in this series. There is less of the ‘death’ parts and less Charter magic. But there is more focus on free magic and the other side of things. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I’m excited to jump into the final book!

I've listened to a few of the songs from the theatre soundtrack and have been desperate to watch the show for ages (unfortunately it's not being shown in the UK yet) so when I saw Dear Evan Hansen was being made into a novel - I had to have it!
Evan Hansen is a loner, he has severe anxiety and is basically invisible. When he breaks his arm, his mum sees it as an opportunity for him to talk to people, maybe get some signatures on his cast. In the meantime, he goes to therapy, and writes letters to himself as part of his therapy to create a more positive mind set. One of these letters to himself is picked up by Connor Murphy, who misinterprets its meaning and steals it, after writing his name in giant letters across Evan's cast. Despite having never spoken before.
The next day Connor is found to have committed suicide. No one knew him, so when his parents find Evan's letter in Connor's pocket addressed 'Dear Evan Hansen' they believe Connor wrote it to Evan and that they were friends. Pretty soon Evan is in way over his head. Connor's whole family believe he and Connor were best friends, Evan starts dating Connor's sister Zoe and he creates fake email conversations between him and Connor with the help of his 'friend' Jared'.

At times quite difficult to read, as we know the truth, and it's only a matter of time before it all comes out.I loved Evan's flawed but lovable character, and despite the lie, a lot of good comes from it when he creates 'the Connor Project'. A website designed to raise money and help those struggling with mental health. We find out about Evan's background and how he actually broke his arm, and the entire novel is just wonderful. No one is perfect. But no one should be alone.

But I was WRONG guys. So wrong. This was full of pain and trauma, hope and love, desperation and fear, honesty and friendship. I cried. Real tears. Actual eye leakage. I can’t believe it.
So Juliet writes letters to her mother who died in a freak car accident, she leaves them on her grave and that is that. Until one day she receives a reply. At first she is pissed off. Who does this person think they are? Reading her private letters and having the nerve to respond? But eventually they start a pen pal relationship and soon both are spilling their darkest secrets.
Declan Murphy is a loser with a record. At least that is all anyone sees when they look at him. He got drunk and wrecked his dad’s truck. No one cares why he did this, or what could have been going through his mind – he is just written off, by everyone except his best friend Rev. When he reads a letter left at one of the graves during his Community Service he connects with the writing and understands the pain within it, he can’t help but respond.
As Juliet (Cemetary Girl) and Declan (The Dark) move their letters to the electronic world of email (I got serious A Cinderella Story vibes – love that film!) Juliet and Declan actually do meet in real life, not that they know who the other person really is to them. And they can’t stand one another!
Usually I don’t get the whole enemies to lovers thing, if you don’t like someone to begin with – I think there’s probably a reason for it. HOWEVER, in this instance they really don’t know one another (apart from secretly, which neither of them has worked out haha) they only know OF one another, and the parts of themselves they choose to show the world which isn’t NEARLY enough to get even a snapshot of their real lives and emotions.
I also loved that the romance took a back seat. This wasn’t a “romance fixes everything” story. This was two people, struggling with some really dark stuff – finding solace in writing down their thoughts and feelings to someone else. There were plenty of shocks and twists along the way (which I honestly didn’t expect at all), truly great friendships and at its heart, a feeling that we are never alone.
I loved it, and my eyes were misty. Also shout out to Warda whose shining review convinced me to pick this up in the first place :) <3

Nix has created such an incredible magic system; with both Charter Magic - the fixed and governed magic but also Free Magic - the powerful and uncontrolled magic often used for evil. We even get to visit death - with its nine gates and mysterious allure.
A power known as The Destroyer is rising, to destroy the Charter and create a world of fire where the dead rule.

It takes everything in Lirael’s power to use the bells of the Abhorsen and save both Ancelstierre and The Old Kingdom.

Exactly how I felt while reading the final instalment of The Raven Cycle. I’m so sad that it is over, but my heart feels so full from all the characters and the drama of this series!
As the search for Glendower draws to its final conclusion, Cabeswater is under threat and a demon threatens to destroy the lives of the gang.

The darkest of the four books, there were times when I felt these characters spoke to my soul. I could relate to their fears and their love for each other.

Blue, Gansey, Noah, Ronan and Adam feel like family, and I loved watching them grow, and their struggles felt like my own struggles. There are plenty of villains, and magic and wonderfulness!

Maggie’s writing style is phenomenal, her descriptions and characterisations unlike anything I’ve ever read! Thank goodness there is more to come from her or I don’t know how I’d cope!

What an epic first read of 2019!
The Nowhere Girls is such an important book. Tackling serious topics including rape culture, sexism and sexual harassment to name a few. This is what feminism is! Not man hating, not women thinking they are better than men, but simply the equality of the sexes. When women live in constant fear, there is a problem and this problem must be addressed.
Grace is new to town, her mother is a pastor, and after having a religious experience (due to falling off a horse) her mother's beliefs became much more liberal. Too liberal in fact for their current church - so they up and move from Kentucky to Oregon. Grace moves into a room with writing carved into the walls, the terror scratched out by a young girl - gang raped, but ignored and bullied until forced to leave town. I loved the portayal of a Christian family who are actually decent human beings. It was a breath of fresh air to read about people with faith who are kind, rather than ignorant bigots.
Rosina is fed up. Her family is Mexican and as the oldest girl in the family Rosina is treated like a servant; looking after all of her baby cousins, working in her Uncle's restaurant for barely anything. She is full of rage, and she hides herself from her family. She likes girls, and her mother would never accept this - Rosina is hardly accepted as it is. I loved Rosina's feistiness, yet she has the softest heart.
Erin is struggling, her mother doesn't understand her, and they frequently fall out. Being on the spectrum means many people ignore Erin, or ridicule her. Rosina is her only friend, shortly followed by Grace.
These 3 ordinary girls, become extraordinary when they create a group named 'The Nowhere Girls'. Having had enough of the entitled ways boys behave towards girls, wanting to avenge Lucy - the young girl whose rape was brushed under the carpet, they vow to take a stand. Remaining anonymous, The Nowhere Girls cause a stir in their school and even the surrounding area. They will not be silenced, they will have justice, these girls refuse to be kept down.
An incredible story of the power between women, from all walks of life, different beliefs, different cultures. But when they stand together they are one. 5 stars!!!...more

So we have Beck, a sensitive boy with music in his soul. A soul that is unfortunately being tortured and damaged by the cruel witch that is his abusive mother. Since her dream of being a pianist crashed and burned, she takes all her bitterness out on her son, and is adamant that he will be a prodigy, whether he likes it or not. This means he is forced to practise every spare hour of the day. He has no friends, no other hobbies and is barely scraping by in school. His life is awful.
That is until August walks into his life. Bright, colourful, optimistic August, who makes it her mission to befriend Beck by any means necessary! She is paired with Beck in a class project, which Beck cannot contribute to, because when is he able to study with her? Certainly not after school, where his mother AKA The Maestro monitors his every move.
She meets Beck and his incredible younger sister Joey every day before school and walks home with them every day. Beck's relationship with Joey is wonderful! He ensures that their mother's abuse never affects her, he protects her and you can tell he loves her more than anything in the world.
A beautiful story, that flows gloriously. I loved watching August and Beck grow, as Beck learns to stand up for himself and fight back. I will reread this story time and time again.

Such an enjoyable, quick and surprising retelling of The Odyssey from Penelope's perspective. Nearly everyone knows Odysseus, smart, witty, promiscuous; tackles 1 too many mythical beasts over the decade he is missing on his return from The Trojan War. Penelope is sassy, intelligent, and more than a little bit pissed off at her cousin Helen for causing this war and therefore preventing her husbands safe return. We also get a new persepctive of Helen. Usually she is seen as sweet, beautiful (obviously) kind etc. Here we seen her as vain, nasty and particularly cruel.
The Penelopiad is told from Penelope's POV, from Hades, long after she and the others from antiquity are dead. She talks to the reader in the 21st century, to tell her side of the story. There is also an important focus on the 12 maids who were murdered on Odysseus' return for sleeping with the suitors who were hounding Penelope and her home during Odysseus' absence.
A fantastic perspective to read, it makes you question a lot of Odysseus' behaviours and in particular, his massive double standards (sleeping with countless goddesses, but fuming if Penelope so much as looked at another man)
Overall a great book to read alongside or after The Odyssey...more

YES! This was so flipping great you guys! Magic, winter, monsters, mythology. A new genre I didn't even know existed until I read some one else's review. Polar Fantasy - now one of my new fave genres :D
Osa lives in a tiny village on the island of Skane with her nasty sister and hard, unfeeling father, her only escape being her best friend Ivar (heck yeah best friend trope - my fave!) Skane is a magical place, not least because the sky frequently changes colour. When the sky turns deep red, the village is filled with terror - the last time this happened a terrible illness swept the island and killed hundreds. When Ivar and Osa are out exploring and are ambushed by two Or creatures that reminded me quite a bit of the White Walkers from GOT, they realise things are about to get a whole lot worse.
Osa decides to speak to the Goddess, to ask for her help, to save her village. So she begins a perilous journey through the mountains facing giants, snow drifts and numerous other monsters and dangers. I love me a good journey story, so this was so fun to read about.
Overall, a magical tale of overcoming the odds and battling the elements, with some violence and darkness involved as well.
Highly recommend!

It's definitely the characters that make this series for me. The actual plot and story have to be taken with a handful of salt, as a good 75% of the stuff that happens isn't explained, and you just have to roll with it. Which is fine - if you are in the mood to be entertained without asking too many questions, and thankfully I was.
The hunt for Glendower continues on; but things for Blue and the Raven Boys become ever more dangerous. Maura is missing, the Gray man's ex-employer arrives to claim what he believes is his - and to wreak havoc with his psycho wife.
My love for Adam Parrish in this one knows no bounds! He is the most precious human being and I love him with every ounce of my being!

Noah had less presence in this one which was sad because I love him, but the scenes he was in were wonderful; and Gansey needs no explanation - he is just Gansey, lovable, posh, sweet Gansey!

Well this was freaking awesome!
As a sequel where the main character from Book 1 isn’t the main focus - I was a bit worried; but there was no need because Lirael continued the story of the Old Kingdom and the dead fantastically!

Lirael is part of the Clayr - those who can see into the future. But Lirael has never received the Sight. As she gets older and the Sight still doesn’t appear, her self worth becomes non existent and she retreats into herself.

Lirael is so relatable! Hiding out in the library to avoid speaking to anyone, her isolation from the Clayr is palpable and you really feel for her.

Meanwhile, Prince Sameth - the son of Sabriel and King Touchstone is due to take on his role as the Abhorsen in Waiting to eventually take over from his mother. But he is terrified - after a hairy situation facing a Necromancer in Death, Sam can think of nothing worse than a life fighting the creatures of the dead.
“You may not See, but you will Remember. And in the Remembering, you will see the hidden past that holds the secrets of the future,”
Lirael is eventually sent on a mission by the Clayr and meets Sam while he is on the run. This leads to many adventures and some serious twists at the end! The writing is witty, action packed and magical!
Overall a non stop thrill ride and I can’t wait to read the next one!

Crooked Kingdom blew my mind! I thoroughly enjoyed Six of Crows, and it just missed the 5 star mark for me, “Better terrible truths than kind lies.”
Crooked Kingdom blew my mind! I thoroughly enjoyed Six of Crows, and it just missed the 5 star mark for me, but Crooked Kingdom blew it out of the water! It was twisty, dramatic and heartbreaking.
The gang are back together for another job - to save a friend and reclaim the money they were promised.
“I would come for you. And if I couldn’t walk I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together - knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”
Rather than one main job as in SOC, Crooked Kingdom is full of plans, jobs, heists and dangerous quests that can and do go wrong. Their enemies band together to attempt to bring them down, its all they can do to remain loyal and stick together.
I love the friendships within the Dregs, the love they have for each other is amazing, as are also the romantic relationships.
Kaz: it took a while to warm to Kaz in SOC but now I knew what to expect and I love him. He uses his ruthlessness to divert attention from his weaknesses. He is such an incredible and complex character.

Inej: I loved the ending Inej was given! Her unwavering belief in her Saints, and devotion to Kaz and the Dregs. She is dangerous and silent - a force to be reckoned with despite having lived through hell.
Nina: Such a refreshing character! She is curvy, witty, cheeky and loves to eat! As well as being a deadly Grisha! Honestly the greatest character ever and her relationship with Matthias is truly wonderful!
Matthias: I love this tough soldier boy, with the biggest soft spot for Nina in the world. He literally left behind everything he was brought up to believe in order to join the gang and I just have so much love for him. (view spoiler)[ I'm still very bitter about his death - why Leigh Bardugo would you do this to me! (hide spoiler)]
Jesper: An absolute joker. But fiercely loyal and with a few secrets of his own. We get more of Jesper’s background in CK. Plus he and Wylan are the cutest couple ever!
Wylan: Damn I love this illiterate boy. He is the sweetest! A near genius with chemistry and explosives but struggling to overcome his treatment by his father.

These characters and their stories are just phenomenal. We get so much representation - from Kaz’ limp and use of a cane, to POC, religions, and hetero and non hetero relationships. Was so wonderful to read. I was constantly on the edge of my seat, willing them to bring down those that hurt them. I’m just sad now that it’s over. I will definitely be rereading this duology, and I might check out the Shadow and Bone series too.

Josephine and her parents are staying with friends in a large house called Cold Christmas for a few days over Christmas time. There are plenty of children running around, but Josephine spots a young girl who seems different from the rest - shy, quiet and out of place. She soon realises that the young girl she keeps seeing is a spirit, but who is she? Why is she still haunting the house? What happened to her? So the mystery begins, with the unravelling of past guilts from previous residents of Cold Christmas house. It was a quick read, most likely aimed toward children. But it was creepy, interesting and enjoyable. I liked the story it told and the conclusions drawn at the end. Though this book holds sentimental value for me, as it once belonged to my grampy; the story itself was wonderful, and one I’d happily return to year after year....more

This was my first Holly Black book and I was not disappointed! Hazel and Ben have lived in Fairfold all their lives, and as all the residents know, they share their town with the faerie folk. They take precautions, they know the rules, don't anger them, always bargain, and maybe you'll escape their tricks. In the forest inside a glass coffin lies a faerie prince. He has been there for years, even back when Hazel and Ben's mum was young; and they are both in love with the idea of waking him up.
When the Prince is finally freed from his prison, all hell breaks loose. The Faeries aren't just being tricksters anymore - mortals are getting hurt, sometimes even killed. Hazel and Ben get involved to work out what is happening and why.
I loved all the magical Faerie lore that is explored throughout this novel, at times pretty damn dark, but it was so interesting. I liked the characters, Hazel and Ben, Jack the changeling, the mysterious Prince and all the Faerie Folk. The plot was complex, and kept my interest.
There was only 1 thing I didn't understand (unless I just missed it somewhere) (view spoiler)[The sword Heartsworn used to belong to the Alderking, but Hazel finds it on the floor in the forest. How did it get there? Who put it there? The Alderking originally thinks Severin has hidden it, but Severin has been in his glass coffin for way longer than that sword was on the floor with the dead school boy, so I was a bit lost on that part. I liked Hazel's (view spoiler)[double life with the Faerie Folk because of the bargain she made for her brother when she was young, I liked that twist . (hide spoiler)]Also finding out who the monster was and what caused it to become that way, that was pretty cool.
Overall a fascinating fantasy world, I just needed a bit of clarification in places....more

More magic, more drama and more Raven Boys! The Dream Thieves focuses more on Ronan - and it was great to find out more about his past and his secrets! Ronan has the ability to take items out of his dreams, which is pretty damn cool! But this ability leads him into an acquaintance with a dangerous person - a person you are either with, or against.
Meanwhile Adam is dealing with the decisions he made in the first book concerning Cabeswater and how this now affects him and the others.
So hard to review without spoilers - but the ley line is open, and there are blackouts and energy cuts across the city from an unknown source. A man all in grey is hunting something - but what? Or who? Tension blooms between the boys, and Blue finds herself torn.
I definitely prefer her character in this one, she was much more relatable.

Arya: Arya is back in part 2 which made me very happy! Living in the temple for the god of many faces, learning the giving of the gift.
Tyrion: Still travelling across the East by any means necessary. This even involves capture and escape, also the befriending of a girl, her pig and a bear - one you may recognise.
Cersei: Karma finally came for Cersei Lannister. Being tried by the high Septon for a multitude of crimes, keeping her from her beloved Tommen.
Jaime: Currently out defending the realm, cleaning up after the war and taking any weakened castles he can. He too comes across an old friend.
Reek: Used by Roose Bolton to give away a bride for marriage, (view spoiler)[ Jeyne Poole - posing as Arya Stark bless her (hide spoiler)] Reek gets a brief glimpse of who he was before he was captured and tortured in this way. He dreams of escape, but danger lies at every turn.
Daenerys: Meereen is in a right state. Dany does what she thinks is best for her people, (view spoiler)[ marrying a local Lord, but is he who he says he is? (hide spoiler)] to avoid war. While her dragons grow restless in their cages.

Jon: Stannis’ constant presence doesn’t help Jon to remain apart from the battles of Westeros. He invites the Wildlings to the wall so they can fight their common enemy together. Still no Sam, Davos or Sansa, instead we get insights for Quentyn Martell (view spoiler)[ gosh his death was horrendous! (hide spoiler)]and also his family on Dorne. Also the remaining Greyjoys get their own POVs. These books have so much depth to them, I love everything - the good, the bad and the ugly. And now the long wait for the Winds of Winter begins.
