Even though Erlang as an ecosystem (language , platform) is huge , the author did a terrific job in separating it in some big sections: -basic erlang (syntax), BIF's (processes, links and monitors, refs,exceptions...) ,OTP and its behaviours ,deployments, distribution, testing, dyalizer and much more
The book is written in an entertaining and humoristic manner. It is heavy on explanations , tips and complete code examples (top down approach usually).
The only drawback to this book is that as a developer after writing my first app i found the build toolchain used in the book is no longer the preffered option by the Erlang community .The new way of building your apl is via a tool named rebar which i found not that straightforward for me. I wished the author would cover it also.
Aside from this little impediment the book is great and i recommend it to anyone interested in Erlang !...more
I was eager to read this book for a very long time. The book opens with Tiberius reign.What i found most intriguing was the readiness of aristocrats to open their veins when faced with criminal/financial charges or anything that could affect their honor , charges that in many cases had no solid ground. The willingness to commit suicide instead of facing trial is mesmerizing to me.
I appreciated the detail of the whole Germannic operation ( Romans under Germannicus assaulted Germannia avenged Varus and recovered the eagles). I was really hoping the book to focus more on Caligula and even more on Claudius. What i did get as a reader was petty intrigues and plots of Claudius wives which nonetheless ended in the death of the emperor.
That being said ,the least expected and most interesting part of the book was the reign of Nero. This part has it all: Assasinations of relatives (mother , brother) , conquest of Armenia and defeat of Parthia , intrigues , plots , decrees , and lets not forget the burning of Rome and also early christian persecutions.
We also get a glimpse on Nero's tutor , Seneca , his rich lifestyle seriously in sharp contrast with his preachings of frugality and minimalism (lets not forget he became the father of stoicism)
All in all the book was decent but not great and this is only thanks to the last part saving grace....more

Main theme : There are 2 systems at work in our brain: - system 1 : this is the fast , auto-pilot-default , associative one , whenever you are faced with a situation your brain first uses this one and starts fetching a tree-like data structure composed of events , feelings , memories , words and tries to mold them into some sort of mosaic otherwise known as coherence so that it makes sense for you. Thats how you construct a story and you believe it. - system 2 : is the slow , lazy and, deliberate one. This bad boy is used whenever you need to focus a large part of your attention (multiplying numbers , driving...etc)
My favourite part: Whenever you are faced with a hard question , your system 1 answers to another simpler question and mischeviously replaces the answer so that it looks you have answered the original one:
Ex; Bob: i placed 200 k on Ford Stocks Fred: Why did you check their financials ? Bob: I like ford cars and i visited the factory:
Bob is tasked with answering a tough question : does he know how Ford financials look like ? Bob's system 1 answers to a simpler question: Do i like Ford cars ? Yes Bob then sets the answer Yes to the original question even though he answered for the second.
Besides these 2 systems that are explained thoroughly with examples and statistics and case studies ,this book is great because it explains so much more regarding human behaviour in making decisions like : the law of small mumbers , priming , framing , utility and prospect theory , regression , planning fallacy and so much more.
Even though the book is terrific on theory and examples on why things happen the eay they are i rated it with 4/5 because i did feel like i wanted a section dedicated to "how to avoid X or Y "

The style can be described as very accesible. The text is astoundingly generous when describing the Salinas Valley,CA as well as its inhabitans, way of life and moral compass.
The recurring theme -- Freedom of choice -- is engraved in this book and everything that happens in the timespan of 3 generations points to it in one way or another. This book definetly could be used as religion and philosophy material. The ending is like a true katana slash , clean concise .....brilliant !
My favourite character was Lee , the hard working chinese immigrant , blessed with intelligence , moral compass , cunning , empathy and compassion , trying to fit somehow into the New World . His fire shines the brightest at the very end , when after intense long studies , he reveals the origin of the recurring biblical word 'Timshel' , which , is the very foundation of this book.
I recommend this masterpiece , it will remain with you for a very long time !...more

This book changed my perspective regarding life and its fragility, finding true love and what it means to make the most out of it ,even if your life's clock is ticking very fast. I also loved the fact that you get to understand the Spanish Civil War , the beligenerents, how it all started but also interesting facts like gypsy folclore or signs that predict the future. The language is simple , there are no fancy words, yet the impression you remain after is very strong.Hemingway proves that you do not need big , searched words in order to create a masterpiece....more
