This muscle is damn important since its the only one that connects the upper to lower body , starting from the first lumbar vertebrae and attaching to the Trochanteric joint. Its a stabilizer muscle that can also assist in movement. However it gets involved in so many movements that if other muscles are weak like core , buttocks , quads , hamstrings and even lats , this dude takes on the load, and for a while it might manage , but in time it can have dire consequences including , bad posture , lordosis , hip arthritis and can go down the whole kinetic chain to knees and ankles. Besides explaining how it works thorroughly (i still not got it 100% though) , exercises and stretches , the author also goes into the energy , yoga and chakra realm which i found quite interesting.
Decent read , and definetly a good one if you are looking to improve posture , heal back or hip pain and -going futher- emotional trauma etc (not sure bout the last one)...more

I loved the way this disease is presented somewhere along the lines:
Your front part of the brain is constantly producing messages. In the center of your brain there are two little components that act as a transmission to the cortex : the Caudate Nucleus and the Putamen. In a healthy brain they receive a message like "wash your hands" , they let it pass through , the cortex enables the behaviour of washing. Now when another message similar to the first is produced the Caudate Nucleus acts as a filter/gateway. ("dont let this trash message pass since we have alrdy washed hands"). In a OCD brain there is an imbalance of chemicals hence the filter is not working properly , it lets all (repeated) messages go through and the sufferer repeats the same behaviour over and over while knowing something is wrong. Add to this the Cygnus that controls your heart and you have a recipe for panic attacks.
As the author puts it , an OCD sufferer gets his brain locked in the same behaviour over and over again. Its like instead of an automatic transmision , the one he has is manual , he has to do manual effort -mindful effort to get out of brainlock.
The main focus of this book is how to unlock your brain from this compulsive behaviour , basically identifying the disease , attributing your behaviour to it and then refocusing your attention to something else.
While at the begining this constant battle is hard , in time it becomes automatic and your gears will begin to shift properly in your brain.
OCD is not curable , its an ongoing battle , your mind vs your brain.
The clinical cases presented in this book are humbling , people performing multi hour cleaning rituals , filling houses with trash , phobias etc ...people losing decades of their lives up until the point this disease started getting attention.
On the bright side , most of these people got alot better and live normal lives after following this routine , without ever relapsing.
I had really high expectations on this book and it pretty much did not stand up to its hype.

I will split the book into 3 main parts and how i perceived them based on their span in %
1. 0-30% This is the most interesting part since the author sheds light onto the mechanisms of sleep , the brain parts that facilitate it , how it evolved (monophasic/biphasic) , and how it manifests within nature. It includes interesting info for example how birds manage to sleep when in transit , whales etc. This part also decomposes sleep by its type : REM Sleep and Non REM Deep Sleep and explains why we need both , which is used and how , how are each of these wavelengths looks like on an oscilloscope etc. Really really fun and cool stuff !
2. 30-75% The hardest part to read. This huge chunk is basically an entire manifesto on the proven (and mostly unproven) dangers of not sleeping enough. While i unnderstand the author tries to prove a point , he starts to just throw around hypotheses and as he himself admits unproven experiments , that sleep is the main culprit and heavily influences a whole range of diseases starting from cardiovadcular , cancers , digestive , brain etc. It starts to look like every human problem is a nail and sleep is THE hammer !
3. 75-100% This is somewhat an average part focusing on how humans could change their habits regarding sleep , how employers could improve their companies by letting workers get their sleep , how entire inndustries andd technology could be devised as to work for our health promoting sleep and not against us like it is now.
All in all i can say the first part was really good , the second part after some point starts to become boring and really painful to read , ending with a mediocre one where you can find a couple of good tips regarding your sleep.
All in all a letdown mostly due to the second part and all the hype around it....more

Dr Greger goes to great lengths to explain what and why each food does for the body or against it. What i found awesome is that besides providing a template for what foods are a must to eat daily and how much of each, he also gives ideas on how to incorporate these foods in your daily meals.
Compared to The China Study , i found this book to be alot more practical and detailed.(Might be because the author has also read the Study)....more

Through a thoroughly examination of the processes that are happening inside one's body , Campbell then proves how a plant based diet is the solution to most of everyday hard illnesses like: diabetes , cancer and heart problems ..etc.
What i found lacking though is the fact that he doesn't quite actually explain how should one consume enough B12 vitamin when living with a vegan diet....more
